I did some research on this myself last year. I had a very good experience with the combination of two programs. I am NOT tech savvy at all, and it was easy for me, so it should be easy for anyone.
First, I bought the program 1Click DVD converter. They have other options, but what I wanted to do was to take my DVD's (we have tons of them) and put them on my iPod for watching while I use the elliptical at the gym (it's nice to watch half of a movie while exercising, otherwise I never get time to actually watch movies!).
The program was about $40 or so, and it was well worth it.
After you get the program (I also paid an extra $10 for a disc to be mailed to me), you also go online and download a free program called DVD43. This has to be running in the background, so it just starts up when I start my computer.
Then, the 1Click converts the files to MP4.
I recommend them. I think they may have programs for music, but I didn't try that.
