Conventions - Impact on Crowds

With the convention center located right across the street from Disneyland I'm wondering how much a large convention will impact crowds at the parks. Attendees bringing their families who may be at the parks during the day then joined in the evening after the convention activities are over for the day.

We're looking at a week (Mon - Fri) the first 2 weeks of December 2010. So very low attendance times in general but there is a 20,000 person convention that overlaps my preferred week.

Any thoughts on a convention of this size (one of the bigger I've seen on the list of conventions for the Anaheim Convention Center) at this time of year having an impact on crowds???

Is it worth changing weeks to avoid this influence?

Thanks in advance for always great advice!

First off, are you a Jayhawk alum or just fan? I am a 2000 Jayhawk alum, originally from Overland Park but live in the Seattle area now.

Last year we went in Sept during a major convention (full facility rental) and while the parks were busier than Sept 2008 I don't know how much the convention impacted the crowds. That convention was also for security professionals so I don't know how many families would have come along. One of my thoughts about December is that many people might be requesting Dec vacations for Christmas/New Years so they won't have the extra time off to budget a trip to Disney. Also, many kids are in school and their parents may not want to take them out right before they go on December holidays. We are planning a trip probably Dec 5-12 and I won't let that convention deter my plans. I think it will be just fine. JMO.

Live in West Shawnee now, have season tickets for basketball and football.

Thanks for the thoughts.

It would be interesting to know the average daily attendance that time of year to get an idea of what the impact would be if say 25% of the attendees brought a family of 4 so 20,000 extra people a day - how much would that theoretically increase the crowd???

This is interesting. I know a couple time when I was a child my dad would be going to LA and My mom took me to DL for the day and dad joined at night. It worked well for us because we lived a easy day drive away and then his work would pay for the hotel.

But I should note while we did this twice, my dad must of gone down there for conferences 8 or 10 times.

How does one find out when big conventions are happening? Is there a website I can check?
