I just got word that the Society of Women Engineers is having their annual conference in Orlando for 2010! I'm so psyched because it will [technically] be my first time to Orlando (my mom CLAIMS she took me once when I was three or four - I have no recollection of this )...

Anyway, I have no idea about the area or anything. There's no word yet on where the conference will be held, but it's generally at the main convention center in the area. Does anyone know where it might be held, that way I can start looking at and mapping the area?

Obviously I'm not asking you to KNOW where it's gonna be, just maybe give me a list of any big convention centers or similar places where these kinds of things are held?

Thanks in advance! I'm so excited!

(Gonna try and extend my conference trip into my first official WDW vacation if possible! :cheer2:)

well if it is DD - then Orlando Convention Center - that say Disney, Gaylord, Hilton, Marriott all have covention centers.

so you definitely need more information to know where it will be.

if at one of the hotels (even Disney) there should be a discount to stay there.

If held at the main convention center in the area then it will be at Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. The convention center is huge - two very large buildings on either side of International Drive at the intersection of I-Drive and SR 528 (the toll road that's also known as the Beachline that runs from Orlando east to the Cocoa Beach area and is one of the main routes from the airport to the Orlando/Disney area). It's about 7 miles to Downtown Disney, maybe 9-10 miles to Epcot and Hollywood Studios, 12 miles or so to Magic Kingdom or Animal Kingdom.
Lot's of hotels in the general area of the Convention Center including the Rosen Plaza Hotel that's right there at the Convention Center.

The Orange County convention center is the second biggest in the country and located in the International Drive tourist area, hotels, restaurants and shopping everywhere with Universal and Wet n Wild near the northern end and Sea World and Aquatica near the southern end the convention center is very close to Sea World.Other hotels in the area like the Gaylord Palms also have convention centers.

Orange County Convention Center Is HUGE.I've been there 3times for the contruction expo. The only thing I can say is find A hotel within walking distance or make sure the one you book has A schuttle. They will be walking involved and alot of it!

Univerasl Resorts offer them.

Thanks for the detailed info... sounds like there's a LOT to do in the area. That definitely seals the deal about a car rental.

General question: Do any of the hotels nearby the convention center also have shuttles to WDW area?

I'm pretty sure all of the hotels on this strip by the CC have WDW shuttles. Just be advised they are not great shuttles - they run 2 times in the morning & twice at night, and you have to sign up ahead of time for them. If they're full you're out of luck. The one I used from the Springhill Suites was awful - and it only dropped off & picked up in the offsite hotel parking area at Epcot. The shuttle was also shared with 4 other hotels on the strip, so it literally took almost 2 hours to get to/from a park other than Epcot! The days the times weren't convenient or the shuttle was full I took a taxi - ouch - $55 one way to MK from that area!
