There was a lot of construction in the Contemporary Resort well as a round resort like building being built. Anyone know whats going on there?

Timeshares...it used to be called "Kingdom Towers" but they've changed the name. I think it looks awful.

I posted a question about this on one of the other disboards.com boards, and either it was deleted, moved, or scrolled away into oblivion before I saw the responses.

My question was something along the lines of...."Why are so many people on disboards.com so enthralled with this new hotel?"

There are many people on the DVC board who are holding up on getting points so that they can get points there. What is the attraction? If it is anything like the Contemporary - which I think would be a "moderate" if not lower if it didn't have the monorail going through it - odds are that theming will be minimal. so, with that said, is proximity to Magic Kingdom the only draw? If so, I'm not seeing it. Nothing is "that" far away, and if I am going to get all excited about a hotel, it better have some incredible theming.

Nothing official has been announced. There are many rumors about it being a DVC timeshare resort but until we hear the official announcement......

Actually I think the new building looks more contemporary than the original building. The original looked very contemporary when it was built but as time has passed it looks less and less contemporary. Except for the fact the monorail passes through it I wish they'd tear it down and build an entire new resort. :thumbsup2

To many, especially on the family side of the boards, announcing a DVC in the MK vicinity is like the second coming of Jesus... no joke. All of the other DVCs are very close to Epcot, DTD, and AK... and most families (especially with smaller children) prefer the sanctuary of the MK. I didn't forgot about WLV being there, I just don't necessarily think of WL being within ideal proximity to the MK.

Here are my issues with the proximity to MK thing:
1) With transportation, everything is relatively close to one another. And considering most people bop around from one place to the next, either for parks or dining, location anywhere on property is generally ok.
2) Those little kids will be big kids within a few trips to your DVC home at Kingdom Towers (or whatever they call it). So, for the right to book at the 11 month window for a few years, these people are obsessing like crazy.

To each his own. I only bring it up because it does seem to be a bit more manic than I would have expected it to be, especially since it isn't like they are promising any major theming at this point. All we know is that it is a giant horseshoe next to the most dated hotel on property, and from what I can tell, the monorail isn't going through it like its neighbor.

To each their own. I understand your point, and totally get where you're coming from. Just keep in mind that there are lots of DIS'ers on the adults and solos threads (sans children, or with adult children) who are waiting to buy into dvc until they are able to buy into BLT.

I wouldn't be surprised if they demolished the other wing and built up the pool area- making it a comparable "deluxe" resort, once the new bldg is complete.

We have been waiting over 15 years for a monorail DVC.
We toured OKW when it first opened.
I told my DH if DVC ever opened a resort with monorail access I would love to buy DVC but until then DVC did not interest me at all.

Besides being just a monorail ride or short walk away from the MK I imagine the view of the MK from those rooms will be priceless!

You now, this new Contemporary one will be dated in some years too, that is what happens if you try to be "Contemporary".
If you start being vintage or classic or fantasy, you will keep on being vintage, classic or fantasy :)

If they tear down the south garden wing and put up an extension to the hotel deluxe resort, I hope they include a new convention center in it and tear down the current tin can convention center. Talk about something that ruins the “look” of the contemporary

We took the Segway tour at Wilderness Campground last week. When we saw the construction across the lake and asked the CM's they claimed that it's hush-hush enough that the CM's have not been told yet what it is and that it is the subject of great speculation among them.

Is it actually possible that the closer to completion this abomination is, the uglier it gets? I know I've made this statement before, but only half in jest: It really looks like the untalented, unimaginative architects responsible for this crescent-shaped tower had never even seen the Contemporary Resort (even in pictures) before creating their design (it clashes that badly).

Which is why I'm wondering what the near future plans for the cr's main bldg are... ;)

I am going to hold off judgement until all of the scaffolding is removed. I work for a large, multinational entertainment company that just completed a $500 Million construction project. It was days before we opened and I kept saying to myself, "there is no way this will be done on time." Once it was done, it was breathtaking, two days earlier it was "just ok, looks nice" and it looked like a big shoebox until the last month or so. So I say wait until it is done

When we were there last Sept I asked the monorail driver what it was and he told us that it was a new DVC building but wasn't supposed to tell us as they were still trying to sell off the new Animal Kingdom ones first before the news of this one was announced. Maybe all just a big "rumour"!!!

Don't be too quick to judge negitively....this place will be something many people have been waiting for, for quite some time....from the amenities i'm hearing about, you'd be hard pressed to find any other DVC resort as well outfitted as this one will be.
