Continuing nightmare journey

Well this morning my poor daughter and her friend waited to the station dragging their suitcases through the snow to start their journey to DLRP.45 minutes later they dragged them back when the train hadn’t turned up and someone discovered all the trains had all been cancelled. We checked the website before leaving the house and they were listed as running then.

We cleared the snow from our car and driveway, burnt some rubber getting grip on our uphill drive and drove to what the Isle of Wighters call the dry end of the pier. As vehicles are no longer able to drive up the pier and the trains were cancelled they had to drag their suitcase to the “wet end” through more snow.

Yesterday the foot passenger catamarans had not been running but today DD and friend were lucky and the girls got over the water to Portsmouth.

DD had hoped to get over early and have a little time shopping first but never mind; she was in time for the train she had booked. But there on the display board was the dreaded word DELAYED.

Eventually, at 12.00 DD caught the 10.15 which because it was so delayed was now going to make just one stop before Waterloo. Unfortunately this did not include the hour long queue to get into the station.

Once in the station the girls joined what DD described as probably the population of London queuing the entire length of the station and on outside for Eurostar. DD’s train had not actually been cancelled but all the people from the cancelled ones beforehand were in front so the queue moved veeeery sloooowly.

At 18.00 DD rang triumphantly to say she was on a moving train.

At 20.30ish she rang again to say the train had broken down.

After about 40 minutes of attempting to mend the train another one was called and pulled alongside to take the passengers only as there were would not be enough seats everyone would have to pack in standing like sardines.

After being told to gather up belongings in preparation to swap trains DD rang to update me and I heard the announcement that the train had been mended and could carry on to Lille.

I breathed a sigh of relief.

22.00. The phone has just rung, “Are you in Lille now”, I ask?

She’s been to Lille but the train that was supposed to take her to Paris has been cancelled. The first member of staff when my DD asks what to do, tells her she will just have to stay the night in the station, in the cold. Luckily the next member of staff is more helpful and tells them to get back on the train which will take them to Paris Nord. This will take around two hours. From there he will try to help them find them a train to take them to Val de l’Europe.

I feel so helpless

Your poor DD:hug: Try not to worry she's obviously very sensible and resourceful to have gotten that far.

Oh Lesley your daughter has had a terrible time .......... are you in the magic yet !!!! i have not been online much kept meaning to reply to your lovely email.

Thank you Fiona and Angus for your words of support. Angus, lovely to hear from you again, I loved the photos you put on here of the children at Halloween.

No, we are not in Disneyland yet - we have that to look forward to nearer Christmas. And boy are we grateful to you for bringing us up to speed on winter clothing. This was a trip for the girls - their first time without family and what a baptism of fire!

The good news is that I have just heard that they are now in a taxi. I dread to think what it will cost at this time of night all the way from Gare de Nord but the girls had just about had enough. the member of staff who said he would help them was nowhere to be seen and I think, Fiona, that they had come to end of their resourcefulness so I don't blame them! Hopefully the next call will be to say they are in the hotel.

Anyway, Angus, How are you all coping up there with the snow?! We must seem pathetic southerners to you with our winging about a few flakes on the ground! Love to hear your news when you are not busy and our very best wishes to you all.

What a nightmare journey! :scared1:

I hope they arrived safely at their hotel and can now enjoy their holiday. :wizard: :wizard:

oh no!!!..keep us updated please..what a nightmare!!!

When I last posted I was relieved that the journey was nearly over and the girls would soon be safely in the hotel. However it was not as simple as that. That last phone call from the taxi was very brief as both girls were almost out of battery life and all I knew was that they were in it.

I waited and waited to hear that they were safe but with no charge I could not reach them. Finally at nearly 1 am our time I had the call that they were in the hotel. My daughter was crying and really upset. Gare du Nord sounds a horrible and frightening place to find yourself in when no trains are running and there is no-one to help, especially after midnight. They were approached by a tramp (daughter's word) who took them to a taxi and then menaced and forced them to give him money. The taxi driver did nothing to help so sounds as if he was in on this scam. Unbelievably luckily the taxi driver did take them to the hotel once they had paid off the tramp although it seems to have taken well over an hour as he claimed he could not find the hotel (which is in Val de l'Europe not Disneyland). I don't know any more details my DD was far too frightened and exhausted to talk coherently for long and we advised her and her friend to have showers and get some sleep. I will hear more when she wakes. I know it could have been so much worse so am just grateful she is safe.

Oh my God, that sounds awful. Your poor daughter. :(

As you said, at least she is safe now. I hope she and her friend have a magical time from this point on.

Glad to hear they finaly got to their hotel. Lets hope they can now enjoy the :santa: magic.

Oh no  thank goodness they're safe now. I hope they can put it behind them and just enjoy their holiday from now on :wizard: whereas I think you deserve a very large glass of wine tonight after what you went through yesterday.

Oh no!! That's terrible! What a journey - especially on your own. Hope they can both get some rest and feel better soon. Things like that are nerve racking. I can't think of a better place than Disney to relax so hope they can do some of that now:wizard:. Hope too that her return journey will be better.:)

Hi Cherry.

sorry to hear about your daughters woes. :). You say you had an uphill journey to the pier?. I am guessing you are like me in Ventnor..?

OMG = what a nightmare!!! Thank God they are safe now - lets hope the Disney magic erases it all from their memories and that they have a fantastic trip!

And they all lived happily ever after...

DD was much calmer this morning and so was I! Having spent the early hours trying to figure out a way to get there myself (any excuse) with no Eurostar tickets available, by the end of the day Disneyland has worked its special magic the girls are back to their usual sparkly selves. Fingers crossed for the return journey.

Thanks to everyone for their kind wishes and aj, never mind the hilly landscape - it's the slope on the drive where we park the car that's the problem!
