Well this morning my poor daughter and her friend waited to the station dragging their suitcases through the snow to start their journey to DLRP.45 minutes later they dragged them back when the train hadnt turned up and someone discovered all the trains had all been cancelled. We checked the website before leaving the house and they were listed as running then.
We cleared the snow from our car and driveway, burnt some rubber getting grip on our uphill drive and drove to what the Isle of Wighters call the dry end of the pier. As vehicles are no longer able to drive up the pier and the trains were cancelled they had to drag their suitcase to the wet end through more snow.
Yesterday the foot passenger catamarans had not been running but today DD and friend were lucky and the girls got over the water to Portsmouth.
DD had hoped to get over early and have a little time shopping first but never mind; she was in time for the train she had booked. But there on the display board was the dreaded word DELAYED.
Eventually, at 12.00 DD caught the 10.15 which because it was so delayed was now going to make just one stop before Waterloo. Unfortunately this did not include the hour long queue to get into the station.
Once in the station the girls joined what DD described as probably the population of London queuing the entire length of the station and on outside for Eurostar. DDs train had not actually been cancelled but all the people from the cancelled ones beforehand were in front so the queue moved veeeery sloooowly.
At 18.00 DD rang triumphantly to say she was on a moving train.
At 20.30ish she rang again to say the train had broken down.
After about 40 minutes of attempting to mend the train another one was called and pulled alongside to take the passengers only as there were would not be enough seats everyone would have to pack in standing like sardines.
After being told to gather up belongings in preparation to swap trains DD rang to update me and I heard the announcement that the train had been mended and could carry on to Lille.
I breathed a sigh of relief.
22.00. The phone has just rung, Are you in Lille now, I ask?
Shes been to Lille but the train that was supposed to take her to Paris has been cancelled. The first member of staff when my DD asks what to do, tells her she will just have to stay the night in the station, in the cold. Luckily the next member of staff is more helpful and tells them to get back on the train which will take them to Paris Nord. This will take around two hours. From there he will try to help them find them a train to take them to Val de lEurope.
I feel so helpless
