Continental Airlines, children in flight entertainment?

Does anyone know how quick to get thru security at NY If I go from Bristol to NY and onto Orlando We only have 1Hr 45 min at Newark, it would be much cheaper to do a DIY, also, do we have to pick up luggage and then recheck in or does luggage go straight on flight to Orlando ? Sorry to be a bit naive but I'm such a newbie

Hi Viv,

Dont worry about asking questions

You will have to go through immigration, re-claim your baggage, go through customs, drop your bags off and then head through security checkpoints. 1h 45m should be enough but no real time to spare at all. I would be aware of which teminals you arrive and leave so you have a fair idea where you have to head. I havent been through Newark but would think that is isn't a million miles different from Philadelphia we did last year.

We do this regularly...

1hr 45mins is plenty of time in Newark assuming the incoming flight is on time.

If I remember rightly, luggage goes straight through.

Our flight on the way back this year just stops at Newark and then goes on to Bristol so I'm guessing we keep our seats etc and just get off for a bit.

Last year we did a different flight and missed the connection in Newark. Continental paid for hotel and food vouchers etc and we had to catch the next flight to Bristol 24 hours later.

So, we rented a car for $25 or something and went for a spin to Manhattan (about 30 mins drive away). Added bonus or what?

(and we claimed on hols insurance for extra clothes, taxi home from airport cos someone was originally collecting us etc).

My mistake - yes, thats right you do pick up your bags briefly before dumping them off again...

Is this for the way back as well

I was hoping that you just booked your bags in MCO and didn't get them untill you landed back home

Sorry I can't remember what we done the last time :rotfl2:
must ask hubby

I was wondering about the Bristol Newark MCO thing as well as we're doing our first DIY trip in November.

We've actually made sure that there is a flight in between us landing in NY and flying out again both ways, so we'll have to sit around for a bit but I didn't want to miss the return flight and be stuck in NYC overnight... as much as I'd love a trip to NY we'll only have Florida "summer" clothes and I bet it's cold and snowing in NY in November! :)

ETA: I think that Continental uses the same terminal in Newark for domestic and international flights - so hopefully we won't have far to walk to check in again.

Here's a link to a rather vague map of Continental's terminal usage. I'm assuming the numbers dotted around the place are the flight numbers. If so, I see our Shannon to Newark flight numbers (25 and 24) in Terminal A but I can't see our Newark to MCO flight numbers at all (37 and 1883). Maybe I'm being a bit thick and reading it all wrong? lol

In any case I'm guessing we need to change terminals as Terminal A seems to be used for only a minority of their flights. That's ok though as we've left 3 hours between flights on the way out and 2 hours on the way back.

Can you see your flight number on the map?

Also, I'm just wondering, have Continental contacted any of you with any changes to their flight times. I regularly log in to my account on their site and there's been about 3 changes now to date on our flight times (nothing too drastic - +30 mins, -20 mins etc.). I'm a bit peeved that I haven't received a single email from them (they have my email address) about these changes so they're relying solely on the customer logging into the site. Is that normal for them? I know with other airlines I've always been emailed about changes. Just wondering.

We've never had to change terminals although sometimes the gates will be close and other times they will be quite a walk apart. The best thing to do is check your next gate on one of the many monitors around the terminal as we have had a gate number printed on our boarding pass which is different when we get to Newark.

We've also had a couple of flight time changes and have never been notified. I just check the flights about 4-5 days before we go to make sure everything is OK
