which one of the two do people prefer and why?

I wanted to go and check out one of the Monorail resorts and then have dinner there after a MK visit one evening, which one should we go for?

Have not tried Captain Cooks, but Contempo Cafe was very good. If you can afford the prices, you might want to look to try Kona Cafe as a table service in the Poly. Very good restaurant.

I have eaten at both, and enjoyed them both. The food is very good at either restaurant. The main difference I found was that Contempo Cafe was much more quiet and relaxed. Captain Cook's tends to be very busy, bustling, almost chaotic in my experience. But, on the plus side, it's a nicer resort to walk around. I guess if you're looking to explore the monorail resorts, I'd recommend going to the Contempo Cafe for dinner, then hopping back on the monorail to get a Dole Whip at Captain Cook's and hang out at the beach until the MK fireworks. Best of both worlds! :goodvibes

We're using our free dining credits and will be on the QSDP with no table service meals.

Does anyone know if I can get a cupcake as my dessert option for a CS meal? I know you order via the self service touch screens so not sure I could chose anything other than their dessert options, which seem to be brownies or rice krispie treats.

I've eaten at both. I give a slight edge to Captain Cooks only because they have the dole whip for dessert.

I got one of each of the cupcakes at Contempo Cafe for our family of 4 to try and all of them were dry and too sugary. And yes, you can count them as your QS dessert. You only choose the 'cooked' foods from the touch screens then get everything else. But I did enjoy the fish sandwich there!

At Captain Cooks, I LOVE the grown up grilled cheese for me and my DD gets the kids grilled cheese.

Captain Cooks has the advantage of being at the Poly so you can walk around and enjoy the resort. You can also do that at the Contemporary but I prefer the Polynesian's atmosphere. Although it is cool to sit at Contempo Cafe and see the monorail pass by above!

I like the more interesting food choices at Capt. Cooks (Aloha Pork Sandwich, Grown Up Grilled Cheese are 2 of my favorites.) There are more varieties of cupcakes at Contempo Cafe, but I did have a yummy chocolate macadamia cupcake at Capt. Cooks. And yes, you can get a cupcake as your dessert with a quick service meal credit.

I would go with the Contempo Cafe because in my opinion their menu is more upscail and when you order any of their Salads they are always made fresh. At Captain Cook's I noticed their Salads are pre-made and kept inside a fridge when someone wants to purchase one.

On the whole I prefer the Contempo Cafe. Quieter, you get to watch the monorail, I have a thing about the Contemporary, and on average the food has been better. I am distressed to hear that someone got dry cupcakes there; I guess the latest we've ever gotten them was late afternoon, but we've never had a bad one, and we usually get something for everyone and share so I've had a few (the worms and dirt cake I thought too dry the one time I tried it, but my one middle daughter loves it).

But I confess that I like to hit the Poly in the evening, have a late, light dinner there and then take a big Dole Whip out to watch the fireworks. So if you're going to be late enough for the fireworks, and you're only doing one, I'd do Captain Cooks. Any other time of day, Contempo Cafe.

If you're wanting to walk the resort, however, I'd go with Poly mid-day, because the grounds are much more shaded and comfy. Early morning or especially evening, shade issue not as crucial and the Contemporary shows to best effect, IMHO. Although you can sit and watch the monorails go by if the heat's too much for you.

Thanks everyone, we might just have to visit both of them as we have two Magic Kingdom days planned :)

The food at Contempo Cafe appeals to me a bit more but you can't beat self serve dole whip ;-) and also the grounds of the Poly look prettier.

Even though the Contempo Cafe does not have a Dole Whip machine, they do have a Soft Serve Ice Cream machine.

so what is the 'grown up grilled cheese'? Is it special in some way or just bigger than a kids grilled cheese?

thanks!

We've never eat at the Contempo Cafe, but stayed at the Poly last year and really enjoyed Capt. Cook's. As someone mentioned it can get very crowded. Since we were staying there we would get our food and bring it back to the room to eat. The pulled pork and grilled cheese are both excellent, and of course, the dole whip! I like the suggestion of eating a late dinner there and watching the fireworks. The beach is a great place to watch.
