Am trying to go without my progressive glasses and go the contact lens route and have never worn contacts before now.

So for about 10 days I tried contacts for distance only and had to use reading glasses for anything up close. The problem with this is that the readers would only be good for anything close up and after that I had to rely on the contacts but those were for farther away, so there was this mid range that I couldn't see. Like when working if someone asked me to look at their computer I had to get real close to it to see it clearly with the readers and with the contacts alone I couldn't read it. Also I'm trying not to wear glasses and having to put readers on and off while at work was driving me crazy.

So I'm going to try monovision contacts. So for those who do this, how long did it take you to get used to them?

I was told to only wear contacts for 10-12 hours a day, so there will be some time that I will need to wear my glasses to see clearly or the occasional day I choose to wear the glasses instead of the contacts. Also take my child to an early morning sport practice and I won't be putting the contacts in before that. So when you don't have your contacts in, do you wear progressive glasses and is it difficult for your eyes to adjust from the contacts to glasses and vice versa?

My glasses are no line bifocals. As for my contacts, one eye is for distance, the other eye is for close up. I have had no problems adjusting to the contacts. I don't have a problem going from contacts to glasses or visa versa.

i have mono vision for contacts so I am able to read
I use noline bifocals when not weraing contacts
I dont have a problem going from one to the other

I have been wearing monovision contacts for about 10 years now. I put them in first thing in the morning and wear all day until I take them out before bed. I had no problem getting used to them at all.

Thanks for the replies, it's good to know others have no problems and can switch to glasses and back without any problems. Today is my first full day to try the monovision contacts. I like not needing any glasses to read and see distances. However I feel that I am still adjusting to them and it does seem like a bit of a compromise but hope this will work out.

That's what I do as well. It takes about 5 minutes in the morning for my near vision to adjust. I think that's because of the astigmatism. Other than that, I love them!

I've got the B & L Soflens MultiFocal contacts...which allow me to read, and see distance.

It does take a little trial and error to get the right pair...we tried about 4 different pair until I found the ones which worked best. It may take several weeks of experimenting with different lenses. My eye care provider was very good in working with me on this...there were times I was ready to go with a "straight" contact, but they kept working with me...addressing the issues I had, until we found "the one".

But they don't work if you have astigmatism. That's why I can't use them.

I just had the discussion about monovision contacts the other day with my eye doctor. A few years ago, although I was wearing reading glasses and he tried to encourage me to wear monovision contacts, I just couldn't get used to them at all. So I put them away, and went back to my contacts with reading glasses. Then my eyes were getting so bad, I couldn't even read my watch without my reading glasses on, so I tried again, a few weeks ago. This time the monovision contacts were great and it took me absolutely NO time to adjust to them. I told my eye doctor the other day what happened and he said that's not unusual, so if at first......
Sometimes I'm lazy and still wear bifocals when I don't feel like putting in my contacts. Either way is fine, and no adjustment in the transition from glasses to contacts.

I am reviving this old post because I am in monovision contacts now and have a concern regarding rides. I am tolerating the lenses okay but am always aware that I have one blurry eye and my depth perception is not optimal. We have a trip planned for Disney and Universal next month. Am I going to be able to use these contacts on rides like Forbidden Journey and Spiderman without becoming desperately ill? Have never had issues with motion simulator rides like Star Tours in the past - but this was before these contacts. Anyone with monovision contacts out there who has ridden these types of rides? TIA

Not really answering your main question, but . . . if you are aware that you have one blurry eye, you should get your prescription adjusted. It only takes about 5 minutes each morning for me to adjust completely to the monovision, so that during the day my vision stays clear. And that's with an astigmatism.

When I first started with monovision, I had some of the same issues, but then switched my near & far eyes. My dominant eye now has the reading lens, and my non-dominant has the distance lens. That equalized out everything.

Not familiar with those rides so I'm sorry I can't help with that either. I've been wearing the monovision contacts since last Nov and my eyes adjust to them also within minutes. The only time I have any trouble is when reading very fine print and sometimes I have to close my distance eye to really focus and then I can open it and it stays focused or get at the right distance from it to read it. I am the opposite of snykymom though as my dominant eye is for distance. Hope it works out for you.

I tried them a few years ago. I loved the vision part but my eyes were so dry that I couldn't wear mine. I had to give up. I really wished it worked.
