Considering adding on at Riviera

I suspect this holds true if you never sell. If you do sell, you will realize a potentially large loss. But that is true for many direct point purchases, and you can insulate a bit with the fixed week purchase.
Yes that quote is very out of context here. I agree that I am speaking about buying to own forever.

I just can't get over the great deal/savings that RIV offers under a resale environment.... Yeah it is restricted, but it is a great property and you can still bank/borrow to ensure you're using the points....

Ironically enough the resale restrictions actually push me towards resale given the haircut direct owners have to take... I've always thought the restrictions were silly for DVC to do given the limited versatility that DVC points actually have compared to other timeshare providers....
Exactly! Also makes it much more palatable to sell it off at a lower price down the road, like even short-term down the road.

We only own resale as of now, and I'm not sure I could ever justify using direct RIV points as SAP. It'd be pointless for our situation at least. My thought process is "we're buying points there because we want to stay there. Why spend more than we need to?" while recognizing that cheaper points exist that will allow us to stay at other resorts.

Buying direct seems like WAY more of a commitment in my mind, while resale feels much less "permanent". I'd be much better off buying SSR resale and using those pts at the 7 month mark to stay elsewhere as opposed to using RIV points elsewhere at 7 months and MAYBE using them once every ~3-5 years to stay at VDH or at CFW.

If we somehow get, say, an announcement at D23 that we'll get 3+ new DVC properties at WDW opening within the next 5 years (assuming restrictions), or a significant upgrade in membership extras, then I'd be much more open to buying direct THIS very cycle. But anything short of that I think we'll stand pat as a family of 3 who often vacations with a family member who IS a direct member.

Like, at the end of the day, if I somehow have to spend my points on a Preferred View 1BR villa at RIV, I'd much rather those be resale points than direct points.

Even I would buy resale Riviera at the right price if I didn’t have to take the Skyliner or Uber.
Yes but even then you can’t do a stay on the boardwalk area without going to topolinos at least once…

I’m not a huge fan of the skyliner, but it isn’t too bad actually. As long as it doesn’t have rain forecast.

The place we are probably going back to from BCV that is nearby is Sebastian’s. I loved it! Great food. Haven’t done Topolino’s.

If you want ease, and money isn't an issue, buy direct.
If you value saving money, and putting in a little effort isn't an issue, buy resale.

Riviera is a beautiful resort (I own direct points there so I'm admittedly biased). There are worse things in life than being "forced" to book a room at the Riviera every year or so. Worse case scenario, if you're limited to booking at Riviera and there's nothing available during the time you're trying to travel, you shouldn't have too much trouble renting out those points in the rental market.
