We currently have a SSR contract we purchased resale last year and are considering adding more points. How important is it to get that second contract in the same use year? Give me your thoughts on what you think is most important when considering a second contract. Thanks!

I bought all my contracts with the same use year to make things easier-- all on one account on the website-- now I think that has been changed so different use years can be on the same account. The drawback (which I think is unfair) is that with I can only have 2 waitlists-- I hear that if you have different use years or multiple accounts on the website you can have 2 per contract. I'm sure someone will chime in and straighten my tie...

Having had different use years I would recommend you get them all in the same use year IF and only IF thats the best use year for you. It sure makes things easier.

Easiest is one UY, but a lot can depend on what you are considering for your add on and why. If you are going for a different resort and essentially intend to use it separately then it's less important. If you are adding on at the resort you already own it will simplify if it's the same UY but it wouldn't be the end of the world if you found a great deal in a different one and bought that. If you think you will often want to use both contracts at 7 months, then a single UY will simplify things a lot.

Also, if it's a small add on you are thinking about then I'd try and stick with the same UY. If it's large enough to essentially stand on it's own for use then not quite so important. There are a couple of benefits of having a different UY if it makes sense for your use. For example if you travel regularly at different times of the year you can use whichever contract gives you the most time to rearrange plans should you have a last minute cancellation. With multiple UY's you also get 2 waitlists for each UY. But, you'll also have 2 banking deadlines and it can get a little complicated if you want to use them both at 7 months.

What's most important is that you buy where you love to stay and can't booking at 7 months.

Next IMO is buy the correct UY for your typical vacation months and hopefully you did that with your first contract so you can buy the same UY now.

April would probably be best if you generally travel in April, May, or June
March would also be good (especially if you might travel the first week of April that could overlap with end of March)
June would be bad if you generally travel in April or May due to the need to bank points by Jan 31st at the latest. If you had to cancel/reschedule after that date you'd have to rebook and complete travel by May 31st (or lose your points). There is no May UY (just in case you didn't know).
The "best" UY if you generally travel at a certain time of year would be right before that time. If you travel throughout the year it doesn't really matter as much.

Don't forget Feb as a possibility. There are typically more Feb UY on the market (more sold I believe secondary to Dec...there is a thread with a link to UY data per resort)...which makes it easy for add on and negotiation and less competition (likely).

With all things equal I would get the same UY.
However, if you travel at a certain time each year and your current UY is not the best fit. Then you may want to get a better UY contract.

Don't forget with different UYs comes different dates for banking, so yet another thing you have to pay attention to.

We own 6 contracts in 3 home resorts and 2 UY. I really wish we had just one UY. It is not impossible to manage but it can be a pain when trying to combine points especially if you are always in borrow mode like we are. While we can transfer from one UY (membership) to another, we cannot borrow transferred point nor can you transfer borrowed points. You can transfer any current or future points and you can bank...but no borrowing. And you cannot use 2 memberships for one night...have to have all points for entire night in one membership. If you will never be in borrow mode, you should be able to do 2 UY with little trouble. But if I were buying now, I'd stick with same UY for all...still like to buy many smaller contracts and have multiple home resorts but would prefer just 1 UY.

Another negative I just thought of: if you transfer points from one UY/membership to another you cannot use transferred points when booking a resie online as they don't show up online so you have to call MS. If you are wanting to book a tough to get resie, that 1 hour delay could be an issue...I had trouble getting a studio standard view at BWV for F&W time with BWV points at 11 month window and had to take pool/garden view for more points (even BW view was taken).
