And, another reason to celebrate....

Move over Detroit and Chicago, my hometown was just given the dubious honor of being the second most miserable [yes, Forbes used that word] place to live in the US. The most miserable? Stockton, CA....
yyyyyyeeeeeaaaah. ya know what's weird about that, besides that it is just up the road a few minutes, is that they have a beautiful school there, university of the pacific, and still all this crud goes on around it. i believe it has the highest rate of car theft too. yay.:sad2:

I've been there a few times.

We have a lot of interesting statistics, too - second to Detroit in crime, highest bankruptcies, highest number of rapes, highest car-jackings oh I heard another one today - highest number of kidney stones, we rank towards the bottom in health and literacy...

but we do have

Hi all, happy Saturday. Bit of an update on the $4,000 test front...

After speaking with additional folks in these offices, something is rotten in Denmark IMO. My mom talked to a person in the company itself about the cost, and they're who got the financial info from her. I thought it was to make sure she could pay since insurance likely would not cover it. Remember also I found that odd because we have good insurance. It was explained as they don't think it's necessary. Well, I'm a questioner by nature and something didn't seem right to me. So, some further chatting and we find out that the financial info was asked for because if insurance won't pay, as long as our household total income was under a certain number and we had a house payment, the company would eat the entire $4,000 cost for the test. And that's when I knew something was not quite right here. What company just says "If your insurance doesn't pay, we won't make you pay. We'll eat the cost!" A company is going to absorb a $4,000 bill like that? Hmm. Being a Psych. major in college myself, my mind immediately turned to "They want it for research purposes."

Well, turns out this is the only lab in the entire COUNTRY that does this specific test. It's still very new and, ding ding ding, We have a winner!, they eat the cost because they want as much data as they can get while they try this new test out. So I don't particularly find comfort in the fact that whether or not she gets chemo will be based on the results of a test NO ONE ELSE in the U.S. does that's still in the "new" stages. Apparently this chemo doctor is in with this lab company on this new testing for research purposes, so he recommends most of his patients have this test done because he's excited about its promise.

I'm just very bothered by this. If it's that new, and this lab in this city is the only one that does that test, and a handful of doctors in this area (possibly only him) are the only ones who use it, who's to say these results will mean anything or even be accurate? Again, they already knew the cause, already knew the % chance of it coming back, and yet the chemo decision will be made based on this data? From this new test no one else in the country does?

I ain't happy. At all. :crazy2:

I haven't seen the stinky bait, but then again, I try not to look, I get nauseous easily. ::yes::

If everyone can kind of keep a good thought or prayer for me over the next little bit, I'd appreciate it. I got some very good test results yesterday, ones that I think can move me on to surgery, I sent a message to my endocrinologist to see if this is enough, but I haven't heard back from him yet. It might take a week or so to hear something (he doesn't have a regular practice, it's kind of hard to explain). So here's to hoping he clears me for March 25th. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2
I said a prayer, and will continue to do so. :grouphug:

Listen to Sandy. :goodvibes

DH called; he's on his way to urgentcare. He broke his finger at work. :sad2:

ask and ye shall receive!

What's with all the lurkers? Did we have an open house and I missed the info?

No kidding... the 15 year old just asked why being a liberal meant being ME ME ME when they preach being all. What do I tell him?

:rotfl2: Smart teenager ya got there. I would encourage him to get online and look at bills presented by each party over the last 5 years or so on a variety of things. Compare and contrast them, and then ask him what he thinks.

is this a clinical trial or is it an approved procedure? Sounds as if, it is still in the testing stage, your mother should not be paying, at the very least, and possibly not being involved at all. This puts you in a very difficult position, IMO. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time. :grouphug:

Okay, so why wasn't he up front about all this? Maybe your mom would have let them have some of the tissue to use.
I would have if they'd agree to eat the cost. Some tissue, not all, and I don't know if I'd base my treatment on it.

Blue's City Cafe on Beale St. has better ribs...if you like the wet ribs. King's Palace, also on Beale, has good food too.

St. Jude is the shining jewel of Memphis. It is a wonderful place. One of the best in the world...if not the best.

We don't know, they won't tell us. All he had said was it's very new and exciting and he likes to get as many patients as he can have it done, and he goes to research conferences to report the data. She found out from the actual lab company that they are the only ones in the country who do it. He didn't mention that little detail, or that they eat the cost to get research data.

Okay, so why wasn't he up front about all this? Maybe your mom would have let them have some of the tissue to use.

The "why wasn't he upfront" issue is what's really eating at me. Not just about the actual test, but the way it all unfolded. If you recall, the office said she had to call the company and give permission before it would be sent and testing started. She called, said she didn't really want it but the doctor did, so go ahead and do it. Then the next day, the mail came and in it was a letter saying he had ordered it be sent and testing started a full day before they ever told her about it, aka a full day before they got her consent. Which the lab company said was required. The letter also said it had already been sent and testing was already started because they "couldn't get ahold of her." She was never called until the day they actually told her about it and got her consent. Again, the lab company said consent was required for it to even be sent and testing started on it. So they were already testing this and sent it there before she gave consent.

I feel like I have a permanent headache from this. My mom, I feel so bad for her. He had said he could go either way and would decide based on these test results. None of us like her treatment being based on test results like this. :sad2: Only patients in this area can have this test done, from the way I understood, because it's only one small lab and (again) the only lab that does this test. Hence why it will take 3 weeks to get the stupid results! So, if people in, say, Georgia, or even 60 miles away aren't having their treatment plans decided on based on this test, why should my mom just because she got that doctor and lives in that area? I don't like it. This reeks of trial and error research experiments, IMO.

She's going to wait and see what the results say, and if he says chemo based on that, she said she's definitely going for a second opinion.

:scared: from Michellemalkin.com --
Granholm mentioned as Ginsburg replacement

Yep, the Democrat Michigan governor is on a short-list of possible replacements for ailing Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Wait until she does to the law what she did to the Michigan economy

:scared1: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! :faint:

At least we'll be rid of her here.

This will be exciting to our hockey fans -- the success of MI's pro teams was what propelled them [Flint and Detroit] to a respectable 6 and 7 in the miserable factor. Chicago, alas, is only 3rd.

Unless it's football season. The Lions have to bump us up to at least number 3 during football season, right?

Welcome to the club of crappy places to live :thumbsup2

SD - I am sorry to hear about all that. Good grief! But it is a good thing you kept persisting....I would have been too intimidated. I'll keep praying...

How could I have forgotten PB! Not to mention the Williams Sonoma outlet next door [that is where I can really spend some money].

St. Jude is the shining jewel of Memphis. It is a wonderful place. One of the best in the world...if not the best.

Hey, TL - thanks for the ribs recommendations. I'm a pulled pork girl myself so I don't know much about ribs.

And, more about old movies, TCM is showing "The Great Escape" right now. young James Garner in a turtleneck

One of our Interstate highways here is the Ronald Reagan Tollway. I think it's I-88 :)

I didn't know Memphis had a PB outlet. I think we'll have to stop there on our drive to Florida next year. :)
