When I booked our cruise last year I chose room 6548. Well, all along I've thought that was our room. Now I just checked the dcl site and it says room 7098.... ? I'm very confused! Is this an upgrade? It says this is a category 6, which is the same as what we booked initially.... Why would we be moved?

Also has anyone stayed in room 7098? Pros or cons?

7098 is a Cat. 5 so it looks like you did get an upgrade. Your reservation will continue to say Cat. 6 though. We had received an upgrade from Cat. 7 (Navigator's Verandah) to a Cat. 5, but our ressie still said Cat. 7.

Congrats, it looks like a Cat 6 to Cat 5 upgrade. According to the person who responded in the room reports, this is a pretty good room. Looks like you are on the opposite side than your initial room and according to the room report for your previous room, you won't have quite as good a view of Castaway Cay.

Oh.... okay, so we were upgraded! Great!

We stayed in 7098 in October of 2005 and loved the room. The location is terrific - near the aft elevators but not too near. I loved being two floors down from the drink station. I think you'll really, really like it.

We booked thru Dreams Unlimited and they assigned us a room within 2 days of booking. I am very pleased with DU. One question, I am very happy with my selection and room assignment but, out of plain curiosity, do they upgrade rooms or reservations booked thru Dreams Unlimited? And how does an upgrade happen?

Technically it's an upgrade, but I'd personally be ticked if Disney did that without asking me first. I usually have reasons I've picked a particular room, so upgrading to a random Cat 5 room isn't really an upgrade at all.

Here's an example. IMHO, when the ship is docked at CC, it's a much better view to get to over look the beaches than to get to over look the docks. Since Disney usually backs into CC, that means that for the typical cruise, those with starboard outside rooms will get to over look the beach.

But if Disney "upgrades" me from my selected starboard cabin in Cat 6 to a random port cabin in Cat 5, I'm going to be VERY disappointed (unless they just happen to dock facing in on that same cruise).

Now if they want to upgrade me from my hand-picked Cat 6 to a random Cat 4 (or better), then I'm likely to not mind. But other wise, Cat 5 and Cat 6 are exactly the same, the only difference is on is deck 6 and the other is deck 7. I've been in both, and there just isn't much of a difference between being 60' off the water vs. 70' off the water.

Acctually, my favorite Cat 6 cabins are the ones on Deck 5, where you're a bit closer to the water (and a lot closer to all the resturants). So I'd be really ticked if DCL snatched me out of a picked Deck 5 cabin and tossed me into a random Deck 7 cabin.

Now just about every other upgrade is really an upgrade. Obviously from Cat 11 to 10 gets you a deluxe room. From 10 to 9 gets you an outside room. 9 to 8 might be an upgrade and it might not. Cat 9 can get you one of the cabins on deck 1 with just the little port hole. But a Cat 8 insures you get a full size port hole. But then again, I think if I've picked a Cat 9 on Deck 2, I'd prefer that port hole just off the water (20') than a Cat 8 on Deck 5-7 (50'-70'). Cat 8 to 7 would always be a plus (getting a veranda). Cat 7 to 6 would be a toss up. Depents if you really wanted a Cat 7 for any reason. I like the fact that Cat 7 is aft. So I'd again might like a Cat 7 over a random Cat 6. I've already said Cat 6 to Cat 5 isn't really an upgrade (not when you've hand-picked your cabin assignment). Cat 5 to Cat 4 gets you a little more cabin space. And obviously everyone would enjoy getting upgraded to a Cat 3-1.

Wow HooKooDoo you have given this a lot of thought... very informative..

Upgrades are simply magical. No one knows the why, who, etc...Disney does the upgrading according to their needs. Perhaps they were able to get more than the original cruiser was paying, for that room. So then they move you up. There is no ryhme or reason. Faith and Pixie dust.:wizard:

Thank you so much. I am perfectly satisfied with my hand picked deck and room, but I was jsut a little curious how the upgrade happened. Not to say that I would not be happy with a cat. 4 or 3 upgrade, because I absolutly Would ; ). Thanks so much for your response. Now I understand. Now of course part of me is hoping for a little pixie dust, just for fun. ; )

Not much thinking, pretty much just ramblin on.

Rambling maybe...
But makes a lot of sense

If available I pick one of the reclassified cat 7 rooms on deck 6
I'd have to be upgraded to a cat 4 before I'd consider it a positive thing and in order to really bow down in gratitude to the upgrade fairy I'd have to be bumped to a cat 1, 2, or 3

Now hows that for ungrateful? :rotfl:

As I mentioned above, we were in 7098, which is port side, on our last cruise and we had a view of the beach at CC, not the dock. Maybe we didn't "back" in that time? I honestly can't say.

Well, it looks like I shouldn't be grateful for our upgrade....

Paige, thanks for sharing your good experience with 7098. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we will be able to view CC from our room. But I'm not really that concerned about it to be honest. I don't know how much time we're actually going to be in our room anyhow!

I think DCL knows just what their doing when they give an upgrade. We were upgraded from a 7 to a 5 on our last cruise. We loved the view SO much that when we booked the eastbound repo we went with a 5 (no 6's left). It cost more but we know what we would have been missing. :thumbsup2

On our first cruise, we did the land/Sea and where checked in at the Beach Club. When we got to our cabin, we unlocked the door and found someone else's luggage. We found out that we had been upgraded and were not told. Our luggage was waiting for us in our new cabin.

From what I've experienced and seen discussed here, MOST of the time, DCL backs into CC so that the bow faces away from the island. It makes for a quicker getaway when it's time to leave. After all, they never let the guests off before 9:00, and if they've already arrived at the island by day-break, they might as well spend the time to turn the ship around now rather than later.

When backed in, the starboard gets the view of the CC beaches and snorkle lagoon.

SOME of the time, DCL will pull forward into CC. Reasons can range from delays getting to the island (so they have to hurry to make the 9:00 schedule) and rough seas (when it's safer to park forward and leave backward than to park backward and leave forward). It's even been stated that the ship has pulled into CC facing forward for the collecting of marketing photos.

When docked facing the island, the port side gets the view of CC beaches and snorkle lagoon.

And again for those that can't remember port from starboard, port and left have the same number of letters in the words.

Honestly, Disney must literally put everone's name in a hat when deciding on upgrades. None of us on this board has ever figured out any pattern to upgrades.

We got upgraded from a category 10, to a category 6. Disney called our travel agent 8 days before departure, and after our documents had arrived, and told us to change our luggage tags. We booked a specific cabin, a year in advance, it was our first Disney cruise.
Yes, we are Disney stockholders, but Disney eliminated stockholder perks over 15 years ago. So it had to be a draw out of a hat.

I've thought a lot about upgrades myself. I definately wanted to pick my cabin. So as to get the best place possible. So If I was upgraded I would be wary because I don't really want to get an undesirable upper category cabin. (noisy or far from everything) That said, I bought the very minimum cabin that I would be happy with. So most of what is above me would be a nice upgrade. If I went from Cat 9 Porthole to Cat 6 Verandah then I'd be overjoyed. Pretty much no matter where it is.

I think you should just enjoy the view of CC from the beach.:thumbsup2 That's the absolute best place to be when you're at CC!:goodvibes
