Confused by "room only" and package availability

I just read the following on a post:

"basic plan is a package thru WDTC and a room only is through CRO. So you would cancel the package and then book a room only (not turn one into the other). In other words, just because you have a package booked, room only could be sold out."

I have booked a 6 day "room only" thru phone reservations. Have been trying to add a day to the reservation with no luck. Is it possible that if I told them I wanted to add a package (are Magic Your Way park tickets considered a package??)---might rooms then be available??

Sorry to be so dumb but haven't done WDW in 15 years!!
 
General inventory for packages and room only is the same but the difference comes in if you have a discounted offer such as AAA, FL resident or AP. In those cases there would be a limited number of rooms available with the discount so it is possible that the room could be sold out with the discount but available without the discount. Or it is entirely possible that the night you are looking for is already completely sold out but even so, people change their plans and cancel all the time so keep trying if you really want that extra night.
