Confused about UY booking restrictions

My UY is Dec
I have 197 Points for 2014 and 210 for 2015

When I try to make a res for nov 27 - dec 6 I get a message about UY restrictions and I should call member services what does that mean?

You are making a reservation across 2 UYs. The first part in November is in one UY the December part in another. You cannot do this as one reservation online. Either book November and December separately and phone MS to combine them or phone and get MS to book the whole thing.

Depending on how many points you need to use you will have to bank enough points form your 2014 UY into 2015 to book the December part.

I have a follow-up. So let's say I book the stay over two use years, but later decide to cancel my reservation. Do any of the points I used to make the reservation get/stay "banked" in next years points? Or not? Or does it really matter? Just don't want to get stuck in case I end up in a weird scenario and can't use some points when I want to.

Sorry for the rudimentary nature of my question.

It will all depend upon when you were to cancel and the status of the points that you used - ie, were they current, banked or borrowed.

With a Dec UY your banking deadline is July 31 so if you were to cancel prior to that date you would then be able to bank any points that were current 2014 points and eligible to be banked. Any previously banked points or borrowed points will stay in the UY you moved them to so in this case lets say you used both banked and borrowed points for the Nov nights then they would stay in this 2014 UY and have to be used prior to Nov 30th or they would expire.

And if you were to cancel after July 31st you would be past your banking deadline so any points used for the Nov nights would be staying in this UY and would expire by Nov 30th if not used prior to that day. But any points used for the Dec nights would remain in your 2015 UY and follow the same banking/borrowing rules that are applicable depending on their status when you reserved.

That is the risk of booking late in your use year. You'll use points from each use year appropriate for each day of the reservation.

If you cancel the first night and it's after your banking deadline, you'll only have a short time to use those or they will expire. If you have to bank points for the last days, then those points will remain banked into that use year.

In terms of points, if you use 2014 UY points to book the November days, and cancel by July 31st, you will still be able to bank those points into the 2015 UY. If you cancel anytime after that, those points will be stuck in your 2014 UY, and need to be used by November 30th, 2015. If you cancel 30 days or less, then they are holding points and would still expire by November 30th, 2015. If you end up banking any of the 197 points from 2014 into 2015 UY prior to booking (because you don't need all 197 for those November days), and cancel, at least 31 days ahead of time, those points would be valid until November 30th, 2016.
