Confused about PASS: Prepaid reloadable card (AE)

I am a little confussed because is it a FREE $50 that you get on there? How does it work? How much do I need to put on it before I get the FREE $50? Will they start taking money out of my account every month or is it a one time thing? Please let me know how it works. Thanks!

When you sign up for the card, the minimum you can put on it is $25. In order to get the $50 with the PASS50 code, you have to reload it by Nov. 30, so putting another $25 on it. So you put in $50 and you get another $50.

There normally is a fee of $3.95/month to have the card, but with this code that is waved until Oct. 2011. So if you don't want to be charged that monthly fee you will have to call and cancel the card before Oct. 2011.

An adult can manage up to 3 cards (so you can order 3), but each individual you put on the card can only have one card in their name, and they have to be at least 13. There is no upper age limit, so you could get one for an adult if you wanted.

They ran a similar campaign last summer, but for $25. Yes, people who used the code, but didn't get a mailing still got the bonus. It apparently took 4-6 weeks to get the bonus after the reload. A few people didn't get it , and after six weeks called AE customer service and they put the bonus on the cards for them.

I think it takes about 10 business days to get. It might be less if you fund it with an AE card, but I used my checking account and there is a verification process for that. I plan on reloading mine as soon as they come and hopefully the bonus should be on there before Christmas.

Can grandparents take advantage of this offer also? Plus, can you deposit $50 originally, when opening it, and have the bonus $50 added automatically?

In order to get the $50 (or $25 bonus from the summer) you have to load money on when you order (min $25) and then once you get the card you have to reload at least $25 to get the bonus about 4-6 weeks after. You can have your initial load be whatever it is but you do have to reload to get the bonus.

To reload you sign onto your parent pass account and select the amount to reload. I assume grandparents can do this. I did one for my cousin.

It can be cancelled at anytime. It's worth it to check out the FAQ on the link in the first post. It answered all of my questions before I ordered my DD's card.

When you purchase the Card, there is a minimum initial load of $25 and a maximum load of $2,500.

You can load the PASS Card using an American Express® Card that is issued in the United States and is associated with a U.S. billing address. Or you can load the PASS Card using a U.S. bank account.


It looks like they're giving a lot away with the $50 promo but the way that companies make $$ on gift cards and rebates is "breakage", meaning cards that don't get used--either completely unused or only partially used. I remember seeing the figure a while back and I think it's almost 20%?


BTW those of you thinking of getting the cards for tweens (like I was) I'm glad I looked at the FAQ since it says "13 or over". Maybe I'll get one as a gift for hubby...

Does reload have to be done by 11-30? Cause I read where someone said the reload had to be done 4-6 weeks AFTER you purchase the card...

You can reload anytime after you get the card but it has to be done before 11-30 to get bonus which will take 4-6 weeks.
