Confused about luggage transfers

I read somewhere that we receive luggage tags and DCL reps take your luggage immediately from the airport to the ship. Is that accurate? Or is that just if you made arrangements for ground transfers thru Disney? How does that work? Do we pick up our luggage from baggage claim then bring it somewhere or does Disney get it?

If you use the Disney transfers, they'll get your luggage from the airport and bring it to the ship or to your resort if you have a land/sea package.

Otherwise you need to go to baggage claim, pick up your luggage and get it to the ship yourself.
