Conflicting reports of Swine flu reported at DisneyWorld

I don't presume to speak for the OP, but I honestly didn't read this as crass. Part of the mystery of this illness is why it seems to be so deadly in Mexico and yet mild everywhere else. Additionally, Mexico is the epicenter of the outbreak, so officials have been tracking the Mexico connections of victims. Thus, I think it is entirely relevant to note that the child traveled from Mexico for treatment, as opposed to being a Texas citizen that caught the virus locally and then passed away.

My heart goes out to the child's family for their devastating loss. That does not negate the truth of the OP's statement that, thus far, there have been no confirmed deaths of US citizens from swine flu.

I didn't find disneynewbiees post insensitive either. He/she was reporting the facts as mentioned in the news.

Sorry, but from reading the postings on this thread, this poster seems highly concerned with whether or not anyone in the US seems affected by this in complete disregard to those who have suffered in other places. I've picked up on the tone of "oh, that's great--it's not one of us" in that person's postings.

I think it's cruel and inhumane to continually belittle the fact that people in a neighboring country are suffering from this flu. Sorry you don't see it quite as I do. I'm just posting how I see it, and not trying to start anything.

I think we need to all sit back and realize that while we do seem apprehensive about the whole situation, it does not make less the sufferings of others.

This does not negate or minimize the grief and loss felt by the child's family. How cold of you to post something so crass. This is a small child who has lost a life. I'm sure the family is overwhelmed with grief! They were attempting to get help for the child.

It is sad to be sure, but it is a noteworthy distinction in terms of evaluating the situation. Presumably there is a reason this flu has hit Mexicans more severely than Americans, and the fact that this young child's tragic death is a continuation of that pattern rather than a departure from it does make a difference in the big-picture significance of his/her case. In fact, I'd say it is particularly significant in this case, because it starts to narrow down that reason - the child was brought to the US for medical care and still died, so perhaps it is something environmental rather than any deficiency in medical care that patients were receiving in Mexico.

Im not going to start arguing but If I did not see that confrence or read about that.I would be at work thinking dang already in the Us people are dieing,Worry about my daughter that confrence just eased my mind a little bit.Im not belittle anybody But I'am a US citizen and I know sharing that info will ease a little bit more minds for other people in the US.I have family in mexico that I call everyday to check on .Again just pointing out info that was released.It also info is still making people think why are people in mexico dieing and not in the US.

I don't think anyone is belittiling the suffering of our Mexican neighbors. They're just trying to understand why there has been such a difference in the effects of this flu based on such a relatively small geographical distance.

I haven't seen *anyone* do this. Not one poster. Not even the one you unnecessarily "called out".

Of course people are going to be concerned when a virus moves closer to where they live. By any stretch of the imagination, that is not the same as "belittling the fact that people in neighboring countries are suffering."

And the poster you attacked was simply pointing out that the poor child that died came from the area that was at the epicenter of this outbreak.

Just heard about the 23 month old child on Regis and Kelly.

As I understand the results from Orlando will be in at noon today. We will know then if it is confirmed or not!! I pray not but it is bound to happen.

We are going to Disney in Sept hopfully it is all over by then.

This makes me wonder if there is something about this strain that is harder on hispanics than other races? I'm not trying to sound racist or anything, but there are diseases that only affects certain races different than others (Sickle Cell comes to mind). It is a possibility.

It's not a mystery that the virus has been so deadly in the epicenter (Mexico) and not beyond, that would be the norm for a virus that burns out rather quickly. The risk now is:

1) the virus is just as deadly in the U.S. and has yet to show itself because there are fewer cases here thus far.

2) the virus will take a deadly turn (mutation) here in the U.S.

Its possible a virus would have a greater affect among people with similar genetics (although I don't think its happening with this virus). Also note that the genes which Hispanics have in common are the genes from Spain, Portugal, and Ireland. It is more likley that the disease would more greatly affect Mexicans (not hispanics generally) because that is where the strain originated.

I certainly agree about people over-reacting. I mean, I have seen people with cigarettes dangling out of their mouth yapping about the flu, although the cigarette is much more likely to kill them. I see people taking their children to McDonalds and stuffing them full of fat-laden food and then talking about how scared they are for their child's health. People do a pretty good job of killing themselves, slowly but surely.

I've wondered the same. I mean, if there are significant enough differences in American and Mexican base immunities that we can't drink the water there without becoming ill, isn't it possible that there is also some sort of 'hidden' resistance or vulerability at play here? Although I think the environmental component will turn out to be a major factor. I don't think one can live in a place as polluted as Mexico City without it having some effect on overall health.
