You know I was wondering. Is it possible that we've had a less severe strain of this in the USA for longer than we think? Honestly we just started testing the substrains of Influenza A because of the deaths in Mexico. Isn't it possible that this past flu season we had regular H1N1, as well as the swine substrain and we just didn't know it?

I was wondering the same thing, but one would have to think that the common flu deaths already documented this year by CDC would recognize this. I'm still cautiously optimistic this will all be ok.

I do have to say that major news stations are really starting to grate on my nerves. The shock value competition is ridiculous.

Exactly !! Look how different our world is now compared to 1918 - it's literally a whole new world !! We are SO far ahead in health care - plus, because of the media , we do know what is going on, and can be prepared. Comparing anything to 1918 is just ridiculous (IMHO)

Unless your house has the equivalence of a hyperbaric chamber with antiviral seals then you are kinda wasting your time...I mean if your school ever does get rampant with it then that is a prudent reaction ( but they will close the school way before that)..but until then just use common sense...

I had heard that H1N1 was the strain that was prevalent during the flu season. It sounds like the CDC expects so many deaths per year, so if there weren't more deaths than expected, I wonder if they would've even attempted to identify a new substrain. Just food for thought, I guess.

I just hope this all blows over without any deaths, as we have enough to be concerned about as it is. I've learned over the years to take the media with a grain of salt.

I was laughing a bit yesterday though. Apparently for about 15 minutes a tractor trailer carjacking in Georgia trumped Swine Flu.

I posted something similar on the thread on the CB. If someone walked into a doctors office or ER two weeks ago with flu symptoms, it probably wouldn't have gone any further than a rapid test to identify influenza, a prescription for Tamiflu, and instructions to go home and rest. So it seems possible and even likely that a new strain would go undetected until it caused a major outbreak or death.

Interestingly enough, I just read that the child was actually a Mexican citizen who was brought to Texas for treatment. So, even though, it was a death in America, it wasn't contracted here in the States.

A top official from Houston just had a press confrence that the toddler was not a US citizen he was brought here from mexico were he was infected for treatment.Although it does not make it better for the family.But still is no deaths by a Us citizen.

This does not negate or minimize the grief and loss felt by the child's family. How cold of you to post something so crass. This is a small child who has lost a life. I'm sure the family is overwhelmed with grief! They were attempting to get help for the child.

Troll? I don't think this person was trolling for anything, or being cold. I think this information was important because it was not a case that was contracted within the US borders.

I don't presume to speak for the OP, but I honestly didn't read this as crass. Part of the mystery of this illness is why it seems to be so deadly in Mexico and yet mild everywhere else. Additionally, Mexico is the epicenter of the outbreak, so officials have been tracking the Mexico connections of victims. Thus, I think it is entirely relevant to note that the child traveled from Mexico for treatment, as opposed to being a Texas citizen that caught the virus locally and then passed away.

My heart goes out to the child's family for their devastating loss. That does not negate the truth of the OP's statement that, thus far, there have been no confirmed deaths of US citizens from swine flu.

Most people aren't so important that the company can't run without them, but MANY people need their jobs to survive and cannot violate workplace absentee policies, particularly in this economy. I think that's a big problem that may get some well-deserved attention right now - I've known a lot of people who worked in jobs where they risk being fired if they called in sick and a lot of school districts that fail kids for attendance regardless of performance. Policies like that force people to go into work or send their kids to school sick, because the consequences are more severe than the discomfort of going to work with cold or flu symptoms.

Yes, and Disney has a very strict call in sick policy.
