my Dniece is being baptized on 7-16

my DS and DDIL are godparents (which is neat since my DSister is DS godmother :goodvibes )

but my sister got a letter saying that the godparents have to be confirmed catholics :confused3 (my BIL isnt even bapized anything yet the godparents have to be) I just dont get it

Ive been confirmed catholic but havent been to church in many many many years!!! all there restrictions drive me crazy!!!!!

there was a pastor that wouldnt marry my DD's friends sister since they were living together (heaven forbid)

yet a few years later he was kicked out of the church for child molestation!!!!!

yeah he was a real pillar of the church!!!! he wouldnt marry a loving couple since they were living together but he got his kicks with kids!!!!!

sad situation

back to my original post my DDIL is confirmed catholic but my DS isnt

its not good enought that one is---both have to be!!!

Im glad to get that off my chest :goodvibes

It depends on the Church itself. However most will accept it if one of the Godparents is a confirmed Catholic & the other would be a "Christian Witness".

Since the Godparents are supposed to be part of the child's religious upbringing, it makes sense at least one of the Godparents be practicing in the religion.

I always thought they had to be confirmed. :confused3
Just one of the many rules...

I think sometimes it depends alot on the diocese you are in too...

In Philly where my Dsis is they wanted both god-p's to be confirmed.

Out in Central Pa where my DD was baptized/christened only one of hers had to be confirmed.

I think it depends a lot of the church too. I am my nephews godmother and they required a letter from me and his godfather (DSIL brother) stating that we were confirmed members of the church, etc. But my niece's godparents are her aunt who is catholic but her husband (godfather ) is not and they had no problem with it.

When my nephew was born 11 years ago, my brother and his wife asked me to be Godmother. At that time, their Catholic Church required at least 1 practicing Catholic and the other could be a practicing member of a Christian Church. I am a baptised and confirmed Lutheran but was not a current member of a church, so I could not be Godmother, the priest wanted notes from the church.

Yeah I think it depends on your parish.
Our daughter is being baptised in August, and they required both godparents to be confirmed and in good standing with the church.

Exactly.

Like anything else it depends on the parish priest. My asst pastor at one time stated that one one had to be confirmed a catholic or even a catholic. Go forward 10 years different bf/ new husband we had my bil and cousin both confirmed but my bil hasn't seen my daughter in years. But that is another thread.

I had problems when my youngest one was going to be baptized since her godfather was from spain but I went back to our church in NJ and the father had absolutely no problem. This is one of the many reasons why I do not go to church anymore at least where I live , if I was still in NJ I would have no problem going to the one we attended ( and we didn't attend weekly either ) .

When my DD was christened 2 years ago, we were told that only one of the Godparents had to be Catholic. Our DD's Godparents were a married couple as well and although both were Catholic, only one of them had to get a letter from their church. I would talk to the priest. Especially since the godparents are married, they might just make an exception.

Exactly, otherwise what is the point :confused3

Our kids were baptised in two different churches in two different diocese and we are Godparents to 4 kids, 3 of whom are Catholic and all attend different churches and every one of these churches have the same policy, one Godparent was to be a practicing Catholic and none of them required any proof of that, they just expected the new parents to be honest about it.

I have to say it really isn't asking too much that at least one of the Godparents be active in the faith since the roll of Godparent is to help with the spiritual formation of that child.
