Confessions of an Over-planner: Seeking Plan Advice

Warning! Obsessively long. Read at your own risk!

My family is going to Disney in June. It’s only our second trip as a family, and I’d absolutely appreciate critiques on our plans. Are there better restaurant choices? Should we tour in a different order – different parks first, etc? Are there things I’m missing that would make the vacation more special? And on and on…. If any of you long time Disney aficionados have the time or inclination, I’d appreciate input!

Just as background, I’m traveling with DH29, DD9, and DS6. (I’m also 29.) We are fairly mellow and laid back, but follow a touring plan because DS has a low tolerance for lines and we like to maximize our time. We are going to be on the Disney Dining Plan, which is why we went with a value hotel – we’d rather eat expensively without worrying than have a nicer place to lay our heads. The trip is a surprise for both kids, but a gift for DS (our last trip was his sister’s kindergarten graduation – this one is for his).

June 11th

Arrive at All Star Movies by 3:00. We requested a preferred room because of the proximity to pool and buses, but I’m thinking of changing it and asking for a room in Toy Story because my son adores Buzz and Woody.

Check-in. I hear it’s usually better to carry your own luggage if you’d like it within a few hours. And we’ll probably want to change right away – three day road trips do that to you.

We then thought we’d maybe check out the giant icons, walk around the resort, swim if we have time. We’re going to Chef Mickey’s for dinner. I have ADRs for 6:20. First question: Bus or drive? We tend to get lost driving in Disney, just FYI. J We are supposed to be there, according to dining, by 6:15. I planned to try and get there by 6:00, just to be safe. We’ve never been to this dinner before, so is it a good choice? I thought it would start the whole Disney magic thing since the kids would get to see Mickey and Co. right away.

We do have passes for this day, but weren’t really planning to use them. I know, silly. But they were only like $4 extra, so I figured if we had them, we could DECIDE to use them, if we really wanted. After dinner, we don’t really have plans. We thought we might ride the monorail just to go by the parks. We don’t want our experience to start with really long lines, so we didn’t think 7:30 or later was a good time to start touring a park. Opinions??

June 12th

Wow. You’re still here. Brave soul. This is practically a trip report without tripping! I’ll try to move this along…

We thought, first day, small kids, Magic Kingdom. Heck, first day, grown-ups, Magic Kingdom. Just feels more like Disney to me. Here’s what we plan to do, in order:

Morning:
Arrive 30 minutes before opening. Disney Transpo. We get cranky when we drive to the parks. It’s not pretty.
Dumbo
Winnie the Pooh
Peter Pan
It’s a Small World
Mickey’s Philharmagic
Haunted Mansion
Jungle Cruise
Country Bears
Pirates of the Carribean

Yes. I’m aware. I missed all the mountains. We’re not honestly sure how our son is going to react to the whole Disney ride thing – he was 2 last time. And we want to start with the attractions we all love. DH and I can take or leave roller coasters. DD likes them, but is going to want to ride Dumbo and Winnie and such more. And we have another day (maybe two!) at MK. So once we see how Pooka does, we’ll fit in thrill rides another morning, if desired.

Anyway, we’re going to break for lunch and go back to our room for a nap. Lunch advice? MK or ASM? Where’s yummy? We’ve never eaten counter service before. My mom couldn’t afford Disney park food on my childhood trips, and we stayed in the cabins last time so we ate lunch there.

Afternoon (aka Afternap)
Get a Fastpass for Buzz (Now, I’m not sure here. I love Buzz. I really wanna ride Buzz. But the unofficial guide, whose touring plan I’m mostly following here, says to wait until now to get a fastpass. Won’t they all be gone??)
Tommorowland Transit Authority
Carousel of Progress (Probably 2x…. maybe 3? My DD has a THING for this ride/show.)
Timekeeper
Buzz?? Depends on Fastpass time…

Dinner: We have ADRs at Liberty Tree Tavern at 6:30. No advice needed here. This was our first character meal. The first place in my whole life I met Minnie. (Missed her when I came as a kid with my mom.) We are SO going here. J

Wander aimlessly in the general direction of the hotel. Is the evening parade likely to be enough time after our reservations that we’ll be able to catch it? If so, where’s a good place to watch? Is it worth it?

Sleep.

Ya know, I said I was going to expedite this. Apparently, I lied. Sorry.

June 13th

We’re gonna go to EPCOT on this day. Unless someone thinks that’s a bad order to do the parks in? Very flexible here… Oh. And this is where I depart most from the Unofficial touring plans. So if you think I’m gonna get hit with horrid lines, let me know, ‘kay?

Morning

Once again, there at opening, Disney transpo.
Soarin’ (Since we’re skipping Test Track and Mission:Space, we thought we should just ride this instead of getting fast passes. From reading about them, I am not sure I can handle TT and M:S, let alone the kiddos. I get motion sick in cars. And tilt-a-whirls. But I really want to ride Soarin’. It sounds marvelous. Am I nuts?)
Living with the Land (It’s not a major draw for us, but it’s RIGHT there.)
Journey into Imagination (Figment Figment Figment, we love you, you little purple guy!)
The Living Seas
Spaceship Earth
Universe of Energy
Whatever they’re calling Ice Station Cool now on the way out. We love that place. It saved our lives on a sweltering, sunny, shadeless day last trip. Wouldn’t you know, the only sunny day on our trip was in the concrete wonderland of Future World.

Lunch - Again, where shall we eat? Oh where oh where? J And back to hotel for nap or swim.

Afternap

World Showcase – Maelstrom is important. I have a THING for it. Like my daughter’s thing for Carousel of Progress. Yes, I know it’s not the greatest ride ever. SHHH. My inner child still thinks it is.

Eventually, we need to wander to Mexico. Cause we have ADRs for San Angel Inn at 6:30. We basically picked this restaurant because we liked the look of the place last time and wished we had reservations. The rest of the evening we have no plans. Probably won’t stay for the fireworks.

Are we gonna be able to fit all this stuff in? Should I be allowing more travel time to get to and from the parks? Am I thoroughly crazy for worrying so much? Hmmm….

June 14th

I suddenly feel the need to know what the words at the beginning of Lion King actually are. Cause I associate that (please forgive the phonetic spelling) “Naht –se vein ya…” with the opening of today’s park, Animal Kingdom. Do they still do the Awakening thing with the characters? Can I tell you how much I loved that?

Anywho….

Morning
Arrive early.
Kilimanjaro Safaris
Maybe, maybe Kali River Rapids. Reserving judgement until I ask my son, who can’t know right now.
Dinosaur, if I can convince at least one other person. Maybe all of us, if Pooka has been fearless. He is sometimes. But I’ll exercise care.
Festival of the Lion King
Wander, look at animals, play in Boneyard, yada, yada… No bird show. My husband has a thing about birds. But NOT in a good way. ;-) Ditto bug show. Except it’s DD, DS and I who are the wimps.

Lunch????? Don’t know where….
Nap, swim, as needed.

We don’t have afternoon plans for this day. Except dinner. At Boma, 6:30. Should we drive or take Disney transpo? Looking forward to this meal – I hear it’s quite nice! J

See! I am making them shorter!!

June 15th

No surprise here, we’re at the last of the major parks, MGM. Another big deviation from published tour plans. Because we’re freaks. Star Wars freaks. Lightsaber carryin’, Vader helmet wearin’, freaks. So guess where we’re going first??

Morning
Early arrival – I’m sure you have the theme. If you’re still reading. Which is quite impressive and patient of you.
STAR TOURS!!!!!
Muppet Vision 3-D (Also card carrying Muppet freaks.)
Great Movie Ride (If Pooka survived Pirates and etc. Alien might be a bit much.)
Voyage of the Little Mermaid
Backlot Tour
Indiana Jones Stunt Show

Lunch Break. Where, oh where? Thinking Pizza Planet. Cause hey, Toy Story.

Nap, swim, lalala…

Afternap
Beauty and the Beast show

We have Fantasmic Dinner Package ressies for Mama Melrose. I’ve heard mixed reviews, but dh and I did this last trip while the kiddos stayed with grandma. We adored the place. Really loved it. So, we’re gonna go again.

Fantasmic! – Loved this, it’ll be our one planned fireworks show. Which is why I did it this day when we have a sleep-in option if we so desire for the next day.

Oh, yeah. We skipped RnR Coaster and Tower of Terror. No one in our family likes elevators. Some of us were stuck in one once. Had to call for help. Not a good scene. And the coaster – Disney theming aside, can any coaster compete with STAR WARS??? C’mon now.

June 16th

No plans, no plans! Lalalalala! That way, if we decide to go for it, we can jump on some thrill rides early. If we missed something important (think Buzz Lightyear if I’m right about Fastpasses being all out) we can repeat parks. We can do whatever floats our boat.

We did make ADRs at 1900 Park Fare because, well, we have a 9 year old little girl. And Cinderella Castle was all booked up. And princesses are a requirement. But that’s not until 6:40.

Any suggestions??

June 17th

Check out at hotel. Can we leave our bags after check out or do we have to put them in the car? I’m worried about heat and our DVD player…

Back to the MK. We begin and end with MK. Again, missed attractions go first, repeats of favorites second, Mickey’s Toontown Fair gets tossed in the mix as desired, counter service lunch and watching the afternoon parade. Then we leave. Maybe to friends in Florida. Maybe home. Not sure yet.

If you made it through, and can offer ideas, suggestions, or critiques, bless you. You’re AWESOME!

Your plan looks really good. Looks like you are taking it fairly easy to me.

Chef Mickey's is Great. A perfect way to start the trip!

I would change a few things on the 1st park day:

Get your Buzz FP either 1st thing in the am or just before leaving for your break. If you miss your return time it is ok, usually the CM will let you use it later than return time so you can use it after your break.

Move Small World to after Mickey's Philharmagic - won't require backtracking since you are headed towards the Haunted Mansion anyway.

Then do Country Bears, Pirates and Jungle Cruise. Just a little easier on the way out of MK.

If you are there at opening you shouldn't have any line issues by changing the order slightly. Also since you are skipping the mountains you will really be ahead of the crowd. You could probably get an Magic Carpet ride as well (similar to Dumbo) since you will be by it when you go to the Jungle cruise.

You will need to check to see if CoP and TK are open - they are seasonal.

I'll leave the other days for someone else to critique. Although they look pretty good.

Test Track is very tame and your son will probably like it.
You may want to take him on Goofy's barnstormer as a test to see how he will enjoy roller coasters. Did you consider any of the pirate cruises there are 3 now one at the yaht and beach, Grand Floridean and I cant remember the third. Also did you read about the new adventure room

Some small suggestions - CHef Mickeys is a great first night ADR. Maybe after just take the monorail over the MK and stake out a spot for Spectromagic and Wishes.

Good place for lunch (CS)in MK - Columbia Harbor House (be sure to go upstairs to each - much more peaceful)

Good place in AK for lunch (CS) - TUsker House

MGM - I never found a good CS place so I would suggest Sci-Fi (OOP) and just split burgers and desserts! Great atmosphere for kids and good burgers.

EPCOT - great CS places - Bakery in Norway (good sandwiches and desserts), Sommerfest in Germany, Seasons in the Land Pavillion.

I thought I was a great planner - but you've got me beat! Have fun!

Sounds good to me! In fact, we will be there at the same time and I have the same parks planned on the same days as you do! ( I love the UG) We will have to do all the "mountain" rides because my kids are older (16, 11, 9). Unfortunately, I can't do all the thrill rides because, like you, I get motion sickness if I ride in the passenger seat of the car -- let me tell you, that makes for a long trip from Illinois when I have to do ALL the driving! :sad2:

Have a great trip!

Helen

Your plan sounds good to me. You are going to be there the same time as us, so it was great to read your plan and get some ideas. The only think I have planned out is TS meals and which park on which day. Other than that, nothing really.

Since you are staying on property you can take advantage of these. Getting to the parks earlier would be an even greater advantage to you. Don't know if the days you have scheduled for the parks coincide w/EMH or not. Everything you have down sounds good (glad to see I'm not the only one who plans their whole day at each park). My suggestions:
MK: Grab a FP for Buzz before your afternoon break. You can use it when you return to the park. As for the evening parade - I highly recommend it. Spectromagic is unbelievable and your kids will love it. I believe in June there are two parades scheduled (one at 9 & one at 11??). Watch the later one as it will be less crowded. And since you had a break in the afternoon, your kids should be able to handle it.
MGM: you mentioned that your son loves Star Wars. During June there is the Star Wars Weekends. I believe June 11 or 12th is the last day of that. You may want to switch parks for MGM that day.
AK: you may want to start your day w/character breakfast at Donald's Breakfastasaurus in DinoLand. Donald, Mickey, Pluto & Goofy are there. That park closes earlier than the other parks, so you can have something light during the day and then maybe catch dinner at DTD or ASM. Someone in your party can get a FP for safari prior to breakfast and then you can head straight to Africa.

I hope you have a wonderful time. We will be going late June (after my son graduates from pre-K). Take advantage of afternoon breaks by the pool because it will be hot.

I'll try to help, but I need to be up front with these disclaimers: (1) I am a major coaster geek (see avatar!) (2) I usually stay off-site at WDW. (3) I am an expert primarily on January in Orlando, and not peak seasons. (4) I have not visited WDW since January 2004.

June 11 - all sounds good except for one thing: evenings can be quite good at MK, and there is EMH that evening that goes until 2 am. My understanding is that they reset the FP machines for this, so you could do quite nicely. Besides, a lot of people will clear out well before 2 am. I'd think about catching a nap before or after dinner and going to MK with plans to stay until closing. This is also a great time to feel out your kids about the big rides. (I don't think you're going to have any problem with them on BTMR, but my youngest was a little slow to warm up to Splash Mtn and Space Mtn. He was 8 before he was a big Space Mtn fan.)

I know you may be tired after the long trip. Maybe this won't work for you, but see how you feel.

June 12 - this sounds good, although I would encourage you to be adventurous about the Disney coasters. If you've tried them and don't like them, hey, you know better than me! Also, POTC will be closed - sorry! It doesn't reopen until July. As far as CS food at MK goes for lunch, if you like burgers, both Pecos Bill's and Cosmic Ray's are good, and they had good topping bars the last time I ate at Ray's. If you're looking for tacos, El Pirata y El Perico is decent.

One more MK note: make sure the bus you take will drop you at MK, not at the TTC. Otherwise you will end up with all the day guests at the MK.

Last thing on this day: you got the naps in. Don't be afraid of keeping your kids at the park until closing. Mine handled power trips to WDW and DL at very young ages with late nights with no problem (so long as they got their naps!) The late night park time can be great for avoiding crowds, and can be very magical. Naturally, you have to judge your own and your kids' capacities for doing this kind of "divided sleep" routine.

June 13 - Tuesday is a busy Epcot day, but things may be OK. Arriving early always helps. M:S is an intense spinning ride, and if you have serious motion sickness problems, you should probably avoid it. However, I think anyone who doesn't have that kind of problem should not miss it. I also think you are too worried about the effect TT will have on you. There's really nothing there that will induce motion sickness. The kids will love TT - I would be shocked if they didn't.

You should be able to fit everything in. Door to door will take some time - I would allow an hour one way. Nevertheless, in by 9 am, out by 1 pm, 3 hour nap, back by 5 pm should work OK, although Epcot will be busy in the afternoon because of evening EMH. You should use that to your advantage, perhaps enjoying some Future World attractions in the evening.

June 14 - Morning EMH today at AK, so you'll want to arrive an hour earlier than you planned. KRR won't be open yet when you get there unless the wait for the safari is incredibly long (that could happen, since only it and ITTBAB will be open among the major attractions). Your kids should love Dinosaur. Just make sure they understand that a lot of the ride is in the dark. My kids never had a problem here. Also, even if you don't ride KRR, you should check out its queueing area. It's very cool.

Also, just my two cents again: I think you should try EE. This promises to be an incredible ride. Again, you know your own limits, but setting aside fear for these things can make your vacation more memorable than you can possibly imagine. (I was a roller coaster chicken until age 36. Now I'm 42, and I've ridden nearly 200 different coasters, including some of the tallest, steepest, fastest, and upside-downest in the world. I'm not saying ignore your limitations - I'm saying make sure you know what they really are!)

June 15 - More and more I think I'm the wrong one to give advice. :confused3 If you have motion sickness problems, I would think Star Tours would be one to worry about. (It has me wondering where the restrooms are everytime I get off it, and I have a cast-iron stomach. I've never lost it, but nausea has reared it's ugly head.) RnRC is a very intense coaster - definitely the most intense at WDW - and isn't for those with weak backs especially. ToT is a huge mistake to miss, IMO. The visual effects are incredible, and the drops are not nearly as scary as your mind makes them because of the incredibly well-done theming. ToT is one of the best theme park attractions in the world. I would be darn sure that I wasn't up to it before passing on it. Again, you know better than I do of your capabilities.

June 16 - No plans is a good idea. :thumbsup2 If you haven't gathered the courage to ride the thrill rides before now, I would advise you to do so. Again - unless you have actual medical reasons not to ride, I would try them once. (Again, maybe not RnRC unless you're sure you're ready for a really intense ride. If you do it, and you can handle it, I'm sure you'll love it!)

June 17 - They should be glad to hold your luggage for you. Missed attractions that are small-line types should not go first, but otherwise you have the right idea. Try to keep mid-day attractions in mid-day.

Sounds like a great trip. It looks like you have tried to use restraint in your planning, keeping from trying to pack to much into too little time. In terms of that, I commend your choice of napping in the afternoon. This will both help to avoid crowds and keep you fresh. I would use that extra rest to stretch more into the evening hours. The later you go, the lighter it gets. Also, as a veteran off-site and off-season guy, I'm not sure on the effect that EMH has and whether you should use it or not. Do your research and plan accordingly, but remember - time of day is the #1 controllable factor in wait times. Using night time open hours can double your "short wait" time. :woohoo:

And don't be a roller coaster chicken (but know your true limitations - I thought I did, but they weren't really limitations; I only thought they were!) :cloud9:

Have fun!

Tim, who wishes he hadn't waited until age 36 to enjoy coastering!

Yes, change to Toy Story, never stayed at ASMovie but from the map looks just as close as Fantasia which I assume is the prefered location. You will save money not doing the prefered, you'll be just as close (make sure you put in your request now for where you want your room) plus your DS will love it if he loves Toy Story.

Take the bus to the Magic Kingdom, leave by 5:15, then take the monorail to the Contemporay, you could also walk from the MK but the monorail ride will be cool.

If you have the passes for your first day and you'll be having dinner right there I would go to MK. Take a stroll up main street, admire the castle, maybe find a short line, don't stay too long, get to bed early and get rested for your week.

At MK I would recomend lunch at Cosmic Rays, great setections and entertainment! (Sunny Eclipse an animatronic alien playing music, singing and telling jokes, he was there in Jan. 06 dispite reports that he was removed)

You might want to get your fastpass for Buzz, before you leave for your nap, check the return time, if you'll have time to leave, nap and return before the return time get them, if your not sure get them anyway, if you don't use them they will be good souvineres since your sone loves Toy story.
A tip for fast pass, when we were waiting for our ADR time for Dinner at CRT I took both of our passes and ran to Big Thunder Mt. to get fast passes for later. My wife needed a little rest so she got to sit for a little. You or your DH could do the same at some point.

Do Soarin' first thing, you may if the line is short ride right away then get fast passes when you exit, you will want to ride it again, it is one of my new favorites!

If you get motion sickness really easily skip MS, my DW got really sick, I loved it though, just keep your eyes on the screen, DO NOT look around and DO NOT close your eyes! Test track is okay.

At Epcot eat lunch at Sunshine Seasons in the Land, we ate there twice our last trip! We had dinner at San Angel too, it was nice, won't return though, nice to try once though I'm glad we did.

OMG!!! Did you say you were not going to stay for Illuminations? :furious:
I'm sure that was a typo! Don't miss it please!

At AK do Expedition Everest first thing, you didn't mention it but if you want to see it go first.

Take Disney transportation, we had ADRs for Boma our day at AK and traffic was horrible at that time with the park closing, but the bus we took, took a special exit out of the parking lot, attendants had to move cones to let the bus through and by passed the line of traffic out of the park.

Lunch I don't know, I've heard the Pizza at Pizza Planet stinks. Go for the Toy Story theme though, the kids won't care I'm sure.

Okay I'll give you Tower of Terror if you have a thing about elevators but Rockin Roller Coaster is great! Best Roller coaster in WDW! Don't miss it!
Star Tours is great but not a roller coaster. IMO Star Tours need a rehab and an update with Episode I, II and III.

You can leave your bags at luggage assistance if you want, they will hold on to your bags after check out till you leave.

Have a great trip!

No real advice, just wanted to say that DD 11 and I will be there (for the first time!) the same dates as you, staying in ASMo and requesting the Toy Story building. Have fun!

Lunch advice? MK or ASM? Where’s yummy?

First, let me say congrats on the planning. You've given this a lot of thought! My family has been so many times now that we just pick a park each day and do whatever we fancy! I always admire those who plan so well! Anyway, at MK, my family's favorite counter service restaurant is Pecos Bill's in Frontierland. The food is really good, they always have good size portions, there's a toppings bar for the burgers, and sometimes there are even singers or characters wandering through. You can choose to eat inside, or there's a patio outside if you'd rather people watch. Although, if you eat outside, beware of all the birds who like to lurk in the trees until someone drops a french fry. If you do drop a french fry, take cover! :teeth:

Also, I've never stayed at ASMovies, but I have stayed at ASMusic, and their cafeteria was always GREAT. Again, the portions were always great for the cost, there were a lot of different menu choices (if you have a picky eater, they will definitely find something they like), and the food was always yummy. :thumbsup2

And the coaster – Disney theming aside, can any coaster compete with STAR WARS??? C’mon now.

Hee! You'll be surprised to know that the Rock N Roller Coaster (IMHO) totally lives up to its hype. The take-off is awesome, the theming is great, and the music totally adds to the experience. However, if you have little ones, they might think the ride is bit too intense. It all depends on how well they like coasters. But if your family loves them, I would definitely recommend it. Grab a FastPass for it though. In June, the lines will probably be out the door.

Also, I think that it's great you've given yourself a day to do whatever you want at the end of your trip. That's a wonderful way to end it, and get whatever you might have missed done. Good job with all the planning, and have fun!

On the 11th, I'd ride the monorail to MK after dinner. Take the train around. Stop at Toon Town. Get back on and go the rest of the way around. Walk up to the castle. There is almost never a line for TTA. Ride that. Maybe go in a few shops.

On one of your MK mornings, go to Toontown about 10-15 minutes before Toontown opens. They generally have 6-8 characters there then. At opening, go get Mickey's autograph, then get in line in the big building for any other characters you want to see. If you grabbed a FP for something when you left Fantasyland, it should then be time for your FP time.

I agree with Rockin Roller Coaster, it is a thrilling ride, but it is done VERY well, it is one of my favorites at Disney World.

Also you definitly have to see Illuminations, personally I feel its much better then Fantasmic and Wishes. If you can the Italy Isola is the best place to see it.

Jennifer

I have to tell you that we will be there on the exact same week. The only time our paths cross will be your MGM day. We are also doing the Fantasmic package @ Mama Melrose. We've never eaten there so I hope it's good!!

June 12 Your plan looks good, but I think I read that Pirates is closed until July. You should be able to do all of those attractions except the 2 shows before lunch and get a FP for Philharmagic right before lunch, see it after.

June 13 looks good. We are going the day before. Do test track!! Both my kids LOVE it.

June 14 - Beware of Dinosaur. My ToT- loving 6 yo was scared to death.
We thought Tusker House was fantastic CS. Rainforest Cafe is fun, but took too long.

June 15 - Your kids will like Pizza Planet. Mediocre food but fun place. Avoid ABC Commissary. Also my kids love the Honey I shrunk playground.

Enjoy! I'm hoping for brief rain!!!

Cool, good idea! I have heard they sometimes honor past-time passes, and that way I'd have an idea of time before we went back for our nap. Thanks!

We're not sure about a pirate cruise cause don't they go without mom and dad? We're thinking six is a bit youngish for a boat ride sans parents. For us. Cause we're overprotective. But thanks for the suggestion! What's the adventure room??

That's a thought! Guess it would depend on how late the parade and fireworks are... we'll want to be up and at it bright and early! But it would be a fun kick-off! Thanks for the counter service suggestions, too!! :)

Okay, those are two GREAT tips!! My dh has just insisted on adding an extra night to the front of our stay so that we can go to the Star Wars events at MGM on Sunday. He's OVER the moon. We'll have to search out more info on that one! And I'm glad to hear Spectromagic is worth it! I love lights in the night, and figured I'd enjoy the parade!!

Thanks sooo much!
