I'm a huge Disney fan. But for the first time, the sterility of WDW kind of creeped me out. We had a car and not a lot of time, so we park hopped. Driving around, it was just weird to see miles and miles of either grass and trees or something Disney (or a Hess gas station.) No drug store, no grocery, no donut shop, no Target. Just a huge world where you can only buy things from Disney.

I'm stll a fan, but I've lost my burning desire to return so often.

Absolutely not. ZERO creepiness for me. IN fact, all those reasons listed are the reasons I LOVE Walt Disney World and the reason why I keep returning. It is truly an ESCAPE from the real world and for me, that is what vacation is all about.

That's what I've thought on previous trips. But I don't know...this time it just seemed creepy.

To be honest, that's part of the appeal of WDW to me. I like knowing once I pass the "gates", I don't have to acknowlege what's going on in the real world. It's nice to sometimes escape and go back to a time in my life when things were carefree and I could play all day.

LOL no way! I actually love driving around on Disney property, it's so pretty! Plus, I know what is beyond all those sterile trees and perfectly manicured bushes, and it's a lot closer than you think. The landscape is 100% planned to keep the "world" from infringing upon Disney!

I think it was the driving that did it. You are on real roads, with real names, only it's "Disney." It's easier to keep up the illusion when you ride the monorail or busses.

Some of the guest definitely creep me out, the property, not so much. I love Disney as much as the next guy but some people go way over the top and it is just scary.

No, I actually like the "Stepford" look. It's what makes it feel "vacationy" to me and what makes me feel like I'm somewhere different.

A couple of years ago we went to AK on Thanksgiving Day. We were so anxious to beat the crowds that we arrived before the toll gate attendants and had to sit there in the car at the gates for about 5 minutes. We were chatting with the guy in the car next to us. He was probably about 60 years old. He moved to Orlando because of WDW and had ridden Expedition Everest every day since it opened!!!

At Disney I love it. It immerses me in something that is not the real world. I usually stay offsite, so I see enough of the real world. Once I enter those gates, I'm in a land of fantasy.

Now, when I see the equivalent of that in foreign countries (like for example resorts in Jamaica), I get wierded out.

I love driving on Disney property, and besides World Drive, there's no specific street names that really resemble Disney outside of the resort streets.

All the trees and shrubbery along the main roads are just natural wilderness. There is some forest conservation things that go on back there, which I believe are mostly to hinder wildfires. And I know they're on an extensive project of removing potato vines, which are not native to Florida and killing the pine trees.

You will also notice that there is no place on property to buy gum or pepsi products.

No, I've never felt "creeped out" by the sterility of Disney, but I do need to "escape" the premesis every so often. That's why we always have a car. To get a dose of reality. The stuff in the International Drive area or the schlocky souvenier shops on Route 192 are just as much fun for us as Disney itself.

Nope, not at all.

Driving around and not seeing any of the commercial stuff doesn't seem weird to me, but I live in a rural area, so I'm used to that. :lmao:

Gum is nasty stuff. If I ran Disney, I'd have the same policy.

Being on property doesn't weird me out.

Like the PP said though, sometimes the people do. One of the creepiest things I've ever observed in my life was on the FW bus going to the Hoop De Doo but I won't talk about it:scared1::scared1::scared1: 2 words: Freak Show

That's exactly what I love about it. I can drive around anywhere to see congestion, Targets, Wal Marts, donut shops etc. I'd like my vacation to be an escape from every day life.

Were they talking about how their life would never be complete if they didn't conceive their baby at Disney World? Now that is downright creepy and exactly the kind of over the top stuff that makes me think some people need to work on their forearm strength if only to enhance their grip on reality.

Just about every day there is at least one thread on these boards somewhere that makes me wonder if it was written by someone who will one day will be the inspiration for an episode of Criminal Minds.

Once we were there right after the hurricane had hit and lots of trees were damaged and stuff was strewn around. The drive in was a little creepy as you could see that it wasn't quite Disney as usual. I will admit that was a little creepy.

Disney, no. The Dolphin, yes. I have no idea why, but that place just gives me the willies.
