Ok, here's a list of the name changes over the years for Chef Mickey and CSH:

•Concourse Steak House
Grand Canyon Terrace 10/71 - 1972
Terrace Buffet 1972 - 73
Terrace Buffeteria 1973 - 89
Concourse Grill 1989 - 95
Concourse Steak House 1995 -
•Chef Mickey’s
Grand Canyon Terrace Cafe 10/71 - 1972
Terrace Cafe 1972 - 86
Character Cafe 1986 - 89
Contemporary Cafe 1989 - 96
Chef Mickey’s 1996 -
(source;big stack of WDW guides and Birnbaums 1982 on)

Now, 'splain to me why the TS place was once called a Buffeteria/Buffet, and the buffett place never was???? :confused3

And don't forget Chef Mickey's actually started out in DTD over in the shops by Rainforest Cafe with a nice view of Cap'n Jacks.

To me, The CR doesn't really have much of a theme. They could pretty much put anything there. Its not like the GF or the Poly.
I agree, if there was a theme it faded into obscurity long ago, the "Contemporary", is a one word oxymoron.

As I said in the DVC thread. Contemporary refers to a style of Architechture and the CR is 100% contemporary. It needs no updating to be more contemporary as it still is. It maybe could use some freshening up, but the fundimental theme is still quite reasonable.

Contemporary is of course different from modern or Classical revival or Spanish mission or.......

Okay, well then I will rephrase my comment, the style of architecture called "contemporary" is a one word oxymoron, and as a fitting theme for the resort it faded into obscurity long ago. :)
Your point is taken but I can only guess that if the CR did not have the monorail running through it, it would lose much apeal as a "deluxe" resort? Ask anyone to describe the CR and the discription would be, "the one that the monorail goes through".
I honestly would like to know what was the original intended theme and how does is that theme reflect in the resort today beyond "unique" architecture?

Half a century ago the designers were told to come up with something that fit the “Tomorrowland” aspect of the park. And they designed something exactly for “the future”. And when the hotel was built – it was the future.

People forget that the Contemporary Resort is older than most of the people on this board.

At the time wide open, atrium lobbies were very, very rare. Straight lines and smooth concrete were considered “clean”. For most people, the Contemporary was pure imagination – look back at the coverage of the opening of WDW and you’ll see a lot of emphasis on the resort.

This was way back in the days before cable TV and only three networks, when you had to go inside the bank to withdraw money, when making a phone call meant finding a pay phone and a dime, hell – us poor, ignorant old farts didn’t even have microwave popcorn back then.

How did we ever survive?

The problem with the Contemporary is that tomorrow always catches up. For the last two decades nothing has been done to update the look of the resort. Sure, there have been a couple of shopping trips down Melrose Blvd. to buy “retro funky” knicks for the place (last the last rehab did) – but the idea of keeping the Contemporary’s theme and design up has been abandoned.

There’s nothing wrong with the resort, but any resort has to be a living, changing environment or else it grows stale. WDW management hasn’t done their job.

Actually, Chef Mickey's was torn down and replaced by Rainforest. The old Chef Mickey's was a very nice eatery, only one character, none of the zoo atmosphere of the present CM  , and it had that nice little piano lounge.

BTW, Chef Mickey's in the village was originally the Village restaurant. :)
