Concierge Upgrade?

When we stay at the Beach Club, we were upgraded, free of charge to the concierge level and we did not ask for it...
We are thinking about going back to the Beach Club...
so here is my question....

can you ask to be upgraded to concierge level, free of charge?

I understand if they are really full but what if they have empty rooms.......

Free upgrades to any types of rooms at any WDW Resorts are totally random and happen when the Cast Member types your name into the computer. If your are to get a free room upgrade it will come up. So you can not ask to be upgraded for free and to risk not getting upgraded at all it's best to make a reservation for the type of room you want, without going there thinking you could get it for free and not end up paying for the upgrade. So it does not matter if there happen to be empty rooms when you check-in.

If you really want a CL, I would just reserve it ahead of time.
