? concerning early reservations/ codes

I am planning a trip Dec. 05. What is the easiest way to pay off reservations monthly and still be able to use a code if one becomes available? For example if I make a reservation at WL now at the regular rate and a code comes out next Oct. will they adjust the rate on the room or will I have to cancel, get a refund etc. Am I asking too much... paying off monthly but still wanting the discount rate or is there a way to do this?? Thanks!
