Hi Guys-
I have a job interview lined up, and the first half hour is a computer skills test. Has anyone completed such a thing during their interview process? If so, what exactly are they going to be asking of me? Any specific examples of what you've gone through would be most helpful.

Thanks!

My only skill is lifting heavy stuff :p, but Im rooting for you

Honestly it is really going to depend on the type of position you are going for and what you are expected to do/know.

I have seen them be things like open word, go to a website and type in...., create a spreadsheet with the following info.... Some are geared towards typing skills if that is what the job is geared for, some will have you open multiple windows and do multiple activities to make sure you can manage multiple windows, identify word, excel, powerpoint..etc.

Take a look at the skills the job required regarding computer usage and those items will likely be touched on during the skills test.

What skills did the ad say were required?

I run an ad that states proficiency in Word and Excel is required.

I confirm this during the phone interview and more than half of the people I interview will come in and when tested not be able to format a basic letter or create a simple spreadsheet. The 'tests' for each wouldn't take anyone actually proficient more than 5 minutes each and they'd laugh at how simple they are.

I recently saw an ad for a data entry position and they required 9000 keystrokes per minute! :crazy2:
My first test (after I got the job) was to design a new voucher.

what type of position did you apply for? That will determine what type of computer skills test they give you.

I've done computer skills tests for a couple interviews. It was things like finding a file, modifying it, copy and pasting, saving the document to the desktop. Then there was a typing speed test.
