So I had to get a new computer since my old one won't boot up all the way. In the long run it was cheaper to do that instead of fix the old one. I know there is not an issue with my hard drive so all my data should still be one the old computer. I know I need to get a cable to transfer the data, but to transfer it do I need to take the hard drive out of my old computer and then hook it up to my new computer or will I be able to transfer the data by just plugging the cable into my old computer and then the new one. The old computer does turn on, I just can't get it past the login screen.

Does anyone also know what cable I will need for the way I am going to need to transfer the data.

TIA!

If you are not using a laptop, and the hard drive is still good, I recommend just taking the drive out of the old computer and putting it in the new one. It will give you the extra space for the hard drive and you won't even have to worry about transferring the data.
I don't know how tech savvy you are, and I teach sailors for a living, so I put everything in simple terms for them (Sometimes it is like teaching 8 year olds, and not the smart ones); so please don't take offense and the simplicity that I am putting this out.
It is fairly easy to change the drives out as long as you have the right cables. If the old computer is less than 2 years old, the hard drives should be hooked up with SATA cables (SATA drives normally have a faster read/write time). If it is an older computer, then it will probably use IDE. Sata cables are pretty small, about the width of a nickels diameter, the IDE cables are about 3 fingers wide.
Either way, just take the drive and cable out and install them in a free 3.5 inch spot in the new computer chassis and plug the cable into an open SATA or IDE port (whichever you are using). You will also have to plug in one of the power cables to the drive as well. Most computers will read the drive without a problem. The only tool you should need for this is a screw driver.

I hope that this helps.
