Is is possible to adapt/replace a laptop with a 56K modem to a cable modem?

Yes.

Now you're going to ask the hard question... "how?" I'll let some people more familiar with it help you out, I just know it can be done (with most laptops/computers anyway). Everything you need would probably be provided with an installation kit you buy/have installed from the cable company. You don't even have to take out your modem I don't think (in my computer I had both DSL and dial-up modem, so I assume in the laptop it would be the same).

Sure. We have an adapter that plugs into a USB port on the laptop.

I would call whomever you wanted to get your cable access from. Some have special plans for installation and the like that will make it so you won't have to spend a dime on anything. You might just need another card similar to your modem or I've seen some that just require you to plug something into your USB port... but call the cable company and they'll help you figure out what you need to buy and what you will get as a part of the package.

you can either use an ethernet card, or an ethernet-USB converter.

Thanks guys! I was worried that I would have to go back to the 56K. I am spoiled by my cable modem and could not fathom going back to anything slower. Having a cable modem has made me a very impaitent person.
