Computer program help!

Hey Guys,
I want to start designing some of my own stuff like graphics for t-shirts, wedding invites, birthday invites, programs, flyers, door hangers and stuff like that. I have a couple of pieces I want to make for my wedding.

I have a MacBook Pro 2012 with Lion. I was hoping those of you that do design could help me out with what program I should use to start designing.

So...What programs would you recommend?
