You know how you can go into your control panel, click on printers, and then pull up the list of printers that will work with your particular computer?

Well - if a printer isn't listed, is there any chance it will work anyhow?

I don't care for the printer I'm using (my awesome HP bit the dust last fall) and I'd like to change to one of the other two HP printers my DD has here that they're not using.. Any chance I can make the switch without them being on that list?

Thanks! :flower:

The should be a CD with the printers. After detecting the new printer, Windows will attempt to load the software to operate the printer. If It can find any, it will ask for the CD. Pop it in and the necessary software (driver) should be installed.

What is on the list is what you have drivers installed for.

Since they are all HP, if you plug one of the other printers into the same port the current one is plugged into now, it will probably print, but it may not look quite right.

If it doesn't come out right, you will want to install the appropriate driver. There are a number of ways this can be done. This is based on your computer having Windows XP. First thing to try is to plug in the new computer and then reboot. Windows may notice there is a new printer and then install the driver. If it does not, there should be a CD that came with the printer, put the CD in and follow the directions. Or you can go to Start/Printers and Faxes and then select Install Printer and go through that install wizard.

Oh thanks! I didn't want to go through all the hassles of unhooking the old and hooking up the new (my computer set up is in very cramped quarters here) if there was no chance that it would work.. Sounds like it might be a "go", so I think I'll give it a try! :flower:
