Wow I have 2 dell desktops and I have loved them. Why all the Dell hate? Just curious if I am missing something. I did notice when contemplating ordering with them. They no longer give a lot of the perks. I got a year free fianancing, 2 years virus protection and a 2-3 year warranty on my computers bought prevriously.

because they put out a shoddy product and their CS stinks. At one time they were a good machine not so much anymore. I do not speak personally never owned one I think for the most part they are over priced for what you get. I speak from the expierence of friends and family who were suckered in by all the dell hype.

what brand(s) do you like? I come from a "Dell and Only Dell" family, and they about fell over when I told them I may not purchase Dell this time.

I've had good luck with HP. I personally won't buy a Dell desktop because much of their stuff is proprietary and HP is easier to fix/upgrade. I've had a couple of HP laptops and Compaq laptops over the years....I've had some issues but have all been fixed under warrenty with no issues.

I don't understand all the Dell hate either. Seems pretty intense though. :confused3

Most recent rankings of laptops I've seen from respected sources still have a Dell model or two at or near the top.

Granted their customer service can be miserable to deal with, but I don't think that problem is exclusive to Dell. ;)

FWIW, we have several Dell computers and the only major problem we've had was actually on one of their printers (that we got as part of a package deal) Yes, we had to deal with their miserable customer service, no it wasn't fun... but they eventually sent us a brand new machine, much nicer than our original one. Problem solved.

The Dell Laptop I have is 5 years old. Thankfully, we learned in month 11 about the terrible overheating problem Inspirons had due to poor case design when the heat sink, hard drive and motherboard all needed replacing then (under the initial warranty) because of overheating. At that time because I was still under the original warranty I was able to extend for 3 years at $150...which was a smart investment.

The heat sink has been replaced two additional times, the motherboard one more time...all under the extended warranty at no charge to me. The initial experience at least taught me to store all laptop files on an external drive. We only keep programs that can easily be restored on the laptop...nothing important.

Rankings do not mean a hill of beans....most are not done by using the computer day in and day out for a matter of years.

But if I did go by them, CNET says the top 5 laptops are:

1. Apple
2. HP mini
3. Alienware (expensive and for serious gamers mostly)
4.Asus
5. Toshiba

I go more by word of mouth and personal expierence.

Compaq from expierence has got my vote. DS got a compaq for his first laptop and it is still going strong but we replaced it last christmas because he ran out of hard drive space and he plays a couple of online games that needed more Ram and better speed.

He got a Toshiba and we have been extremely happy with that also.

Our Desktop which we hardly ever use anymore is still working without a glitch and it a 1997 running Windows 98.

I would never buy an IBM product ie Lenovo as they are now calling themselves nor a Dell.

My first computer years and years ago was an IBM and they had to replace it 5 times in the first year!

As a previous poster stated Compaqs are easy to repair or replace parts /upgrade if need be or just because you want too.

My FIL will buy only Dell ....ask me if any of the Dell's he has bought in the last 10 years are still working.....answer is No, not a one.

And yet he still buys Dell, beats the heck out of me!

Hubby's Dell is working well, but he got a refurb direct from dell.com, and when he first got it it wouldn't work. Spent about an hour with the support people, who wanted him to do something that really could have voided the warranty (wanted him to open up the computer). He got the guy to write an email stating that he was telling Robert to do it, etc etc, we waited until he got the email, and THEN he did it. Robert's good with computers anyway, so actually doing what the guy said wasn't a problem, but he didn't want to mess up warranty stuff.

After that it was just fine.

I would never buy a Dell, none of my friends would buy a Dell. I have a friend who used to work for the company and he has told me too many horror stories about how the computers are put together, handled, tested, shipped, and how horrible the CS is. I would not even take a Dell computer if someone was giving it to me free... THAT is how serious I am about how bad I believe the company and systems are.

Personally, I would go with Asus or MAYBE a Sony Vaio. I would also check sites like Newegg to get a good idea of what you might want to look for. They have a greater selection of manufacturers, customer reviews, and (at least to me) their specs are easier to read.
