DD wants a digital camera for Christmas. I have a Cannon that I like. Do I need to stay within the Cannon brand for the sake of my computer?....e.g. if I add software for Kodak, for example, onto the same computer that has the Cannon software, will that confuse the computer, or make it run slower or anything else bad?

She's 12. I'm thinking of sticking with Cannon so if she can't figure something out, maybe I can help her. She thinks she wants to be a photographer, so the camera needs a fair number of settings. I also think she'd like something pretty small but i don't think Cannon offers one that is very small.

i had kodak and canon software on my older computer and no problems...it is just like having 2 software programs...the only thing that might happen is not sure how it would download...ie the kodak was never used so i had the default/automatic downloader as the canon. you might have to open the kodak software to download with it if you want to use it

Hye Jann, your Edison quote is the one that my son tries to fit into all of his SAT essays!

We have a Canon A540 and just got an A560. You can change the shutter speed, aperature and ISO on them. They are under $150. May be worth checking out. We have Canon software, Nikon View 5 and Nikon Picture Project on our computers. No problems.

So long as you have hard drive space to hold all the pictures and the different software programs you have nothing to worry about.

I use a Nikon D50. I also have a Canon Powershot S30 and DW has her camera phone and some other inexpensive 3MP camera. I also have software for Nikon (Picture Project and Capture NX) as well as Adobe Photoshop Elements and Lightroom.

Each one of your family members can have a different brand camera. The computer really doesn't care. If you use a card reader then you wont have to use as much software and instead use 1 universal software program like Photoshop Elements or something like that.

Not a problem for the computer. There is some benefit to using the same brand of cameras in that the controls may work in a similar fashion.
