Computer help, please!!! Mouse not working! Only 16 bit color!!

Aggghhhh!!!!! My kids shut down the computer the wrong way and now my mouse driver is not installing. It says unable to install vmouse.vxd and my screen is only in 16 bit color!! I am trying to do this only using my keyboard! Am I going to have to reinstall Windows ME completley?? If I do, will I lose everything in my computer?? What do I do??? I have been sitting here for over two hours trying to figure out what to do?!?!?

Have you tried rebooting in safe mode?

Well. you learn something new everyday. I was thinking it was some form of device driver conflict. I have never heard of Windows eating its own INI files before.

Ummm.....what all is supposed to be in my system.ini file? I have a whole bunch of webpage code and then the [boot] and only about six very short lines of text?

the web page code should not be in there. Unfortunately I don't have an ME machine handy to show you what the file should look like. Generally speaking the lines should look similar to this, an XP system.ini file but the actual content will be diferent.. the web code part sounds like the problem

*sigh* It didn't work. Am I doomed to reinstalling my windows? That means trying to save everything to disc using just the keyboard. Doesn't sound like fun!

Okay, system restore sounds like an option, but when I get into the system restore program, a page comes up showing a calendar asking you to which date you want to restore. I can't figure out how to select a date without using the mouse. I tried tabbing it and can't get the date to change. Any ideas on how I do that without my mouse?
