Got some viruses on the computer the other day, I was cleaning them off, rebooted my computer, and now I get nothing on my desktop, just my wallpaper. Normally I would just restore my computer, but I had some pictures of DS's birthday that I didn't have transfered to disk that I really want to get off there. Can anyone give me any sort of advice? I really want those pictures!!

Did you try doing a search for all jpgs on your computer? They are likely still there somewhere

:( I hope you can get them back

I can't get anywhere to search for them. I don't even get a start button.

Do you have a windows key on your keyboard? Clicking that should bring up the start menu

None of the buttons do anything when I push them. I have tried everything!!

Reboot your machine and hit F8 while its loading.
Select SAFE MODE.
You should be able to have access to the start menu
Do a search on your CPU for the pictures.
Next, do a virus scan. Sometimes you can catch more viruses in a safe scan mode.

I agree with all of this.

Plus it's a good reminder to do frequent backups.

(stepping off soap box)

Wow, 2 Jeffs think alike...

Forgot about the backups though..
Thanks for pointing that out.

Okay, I have tried hitting the F8 key, nothing happens. I suppose I should have said this from the start. You know how when you boot up your computer and you get a black screen and stuff typed on it abount your machine? Well, I don't get any of that either.

Did you hit F8 as soon as you turned the computer on? I usually start hitting it every few seconds as soon as I hit the power button. With these fast computers, it's hard to catch it sometimes. Although it doesn't sound like that will work for you anyway.

Do you have a Norton CD? If so, try booting with it in the drive. I would go ahead & run the scan first, but when it's done you should be at a DOS prompt. From there, you should be able to do a search for all JPG files & copy them to floppies.

I hope all this works, I will let you know tomorrow!

Okay, so I was able to boot up in safe mode, but I still got no icons, no start button, and when I hit the Windows key, I got nothing. Any other ideas?

The only thing I can suggest is reformatting if you aren't getting anything in safe mode either. That's a really really bad sign... I'm sorry:(

I was afraid of that. I just don't want to be the bad mommy with no pictures of her kid's 5th birthday!

What Operating System are you using.

If you are using XP. Try restoring to the last working configuration. This should resore your systems settings while preserving your data. Then I would run your virus scanner to remove the virus.

Hope this works

ASK around. The chances are you have a "computer geek" friend or neighbor. They should be able to boot off a CD or floppy and at least copy the JPG files off your computer.

There are data recovery companies that can help you but I doubt it would be cost effective for birthday pictures.

Patch'sD, I am using Windows ME, and I hate it!

Lewisc, I ahve asked around, most "geeks" I know say they have really no clue about it, after I told them what happened to it when I put it in safe mode.
