My 10 year old is getting a computer for Christmas. I want to start buying software for it now. Maybe something each week. Can anyone recomend games or software that would be good for a 10 year old.

I would say the Roller Coaster Tycoon series. #3 just came out last month and you can create your own water parks with this one.

That sounds interesting. He loves theme parks and sim games.

You didn't say if your 10yo is a boy or girl (but after seeing the pics in your signature, I'm guessing, a boy?).

The "Tycoon" ones are a lot of fun. There's different kinds: waterpark, rollercoaster, school, Sea World, & others.

DD11 really loved the Nancy Drew games last year. We are just waiting for a new one to come out.

What is your son like? Before anyone can make any good suggestions we need to know what kind of things he likes. My son likes strategy things and WWII so he plays Call of Duty 2, Rise of Nations, Rome Total War and if broadband Battlefield 2. He also has Star Wars Battlefront. My son plays these for hours and rise of nations esp. really helped his reading.

I would sugest the RollerCoaster Tycoon games. But I also agree with Daisy Duck, when my DD was younger, she LOVED the Nancy Drew Mysteries games! Good luck!

My son loves the lego related ones. You can actually pull several of them off the lego website for free. They let you build your own things and order the parts to make them (seems like great marketing to me!).

He also likes roller coaster tycoon, and he plays the command and conquer series quite a bit. Note that command and conquer is war games, so that could be offensive to some people.

Ditto! Sounds like we have the same son!

My DD is 11 and she and her friends love The Sims.

Yes, my 10 year old is a boy. He loves sim type games. He loves art. He has playstation 2 and has a couple of war games that he plays on that.

A game a week between now and Christmas is a LOT of computer games. You will use up all your memory. My kids have Sims, Zoo Tycoon and our oldest plays Starcraft. Other then those games they go online to sites like addictinggames.com, nabisco and several other "food" type sites that have free games. I would suggest getting a game or two like the Tycoon ones and then just have him play the online games.

Not to be repetitive, but my 10 year old son has spent hours building the most intricate theme parks on Roller Coaster Tycoon. It's also taught him some rudimentary physics, etc. because he's started thinking about g-forces, etc. Great program.

A game a week is a lot. But I really meant I plan to start buying a Christmas present a week. I have 2 sons, so the 10 year old isn't getting all the gifts.

I have picked out 3 games on Amazon. I saved them in my cart for now. I can buy them later. They are Roller Coaster tycoon 3, Zoo Tycoon 2 and Mall Tycoon 3. I'd like to find something educational and something for art.

I have to investigate Roller Coaster tycoon 3. I've read that there could be problems with certain video cards. We have an Intel GMA 900. I hope it will work.

I don't know much about memory, but his computer has 512MB. Is that good?

That is a good amount of memory but from your original post it sounded like you were going to buy him a game a week. If you downloaded all those games onto a computer, it would eat up a LOT of memory. Having a few games installed is fine, but not 20+ games like it sounded from your OP.
