Somehow I lost all sound on my laptop! A few days ago I disabled the sound on my laptop, not sure how, but I could still get sound through the HDMI cord and get sound when it was hooked up to the TV. Now even that is gone! (I think my DH did something with that, but he said he didn't). I have tried a system restore but thats not working, I keep getting a error message. When I go to computer devices and click on sound it shows that both devices are working! Any ideas??

Do you have a Mac or a PC?
I know of PC's and that is it.
You should try the mute button.
Check the "Sounds" box, right click on your volume icon in the toolbar.
Check your master volume as well.
Check you "Volume Control Options" too.
This is all for a PC. Hope you can fix the problem. Good luck!

have you installed any updates? I lost sound once after a windows update. I believe I had to uninstall the soundcard (? maybe, it's been a while) and restart the computer and I think it automatically reinstalled and worked from there. It's been a few years though.

hahaha, of course I checked the mute button!!!

When I hover the mouse over the speaker icon a box comes up thats says "no audio output device is installed".

Dawson - I have thought about doing something like that but I am afraid I will completly lose the sound card.

oh, and its a PC, using the 2nd newest version of Windows. Its a sony vaio if that makes a difference.

Your drivers are probably corrupted. Go to your Control Panel. Click on Sound & audio devices. Then hardware. Find out what model sound card you have. (While you are there, check to see everything is properly checked as on.) Then go to the website and download the latest drivers.

Also, how far back a date did you pick to do a System Restore? You might not have gone back far enough.

Vista? That's what I have and the pc that it occurred on. Even if you uninstall, you can go and manually reinstall, but I'm pretty sure it will automatically do it when you restart.

Also, since you gave the message that it is giving you. I googled that and came up with this:

Yeah, I have sound!!

I ended up doing what dawson said and unistalling the devices and then restarting my computer and it worked! Thank you Dawson!
