Having been out of the dating world for quite some time, the only things I know about computer dating are the horror stories in the news. I know there must be some good stories - how else would all the services exist?

My great-aunt is 78 although she neither looks or acts it. She is lonely for male companionship and while she was visiting over the weekend checked out match.com for some men in her area (Cape Cod, MA). My sister offered to pay for the first month of service and she is waiting to hear back from 2 gentlemen. I'm to screen the answers (if they come) and then let her know. I'm just not sure how comfortable I am with this. Is it safe? Are these websites just scams or are they ok? It seemed on the up and up, but you never know. Most of the older men are looking for much younger women (of course!). She does not want to lie about anything, will this hamper her luck? Let me just say, she's very independant, doesn't want to get married, she'd just like a nice lunch date or two. I'd love to hear any pros or cons you all have experienced with these online services.

well I met my husband over the internet in 99 we have now been married for three years.

He had placed a yahoo singles ad. We talked for a long time over the computer. We finally agreed to meet at Cheers at Logan Airport. It sounds weird but that was a very busy place lots of security.

I know that some people think it is a really bad idea to meet people on the internet. I would have to disagree this way you arent going out to bars. You can find the ads that sound like someone that you want to date and you can screen them bofore yo have to meet them.

I hope aunt can find someone that will make her very happy.

best of luck,
Meggan

I met my fiance online. Though we just met through yahoo clubs and not any dating service. I see nothing wrong with meeting ppl over the net as long as someone takes their time. My fiance and i simply chatted via Yahoo Instant Messenger for over 2 years b4 meeting in person for the first time last august. I couldn't be happier with him. He's a great person, and marrying him is the best decision I ever made. We'll be married in October.
As for Match.Com i don't really know a whole lot about it other than its reputation. Its very high BTW. i do believe they screen their clients somewhat. There are quite a lot of couples getting married these days who met through the service. If your aunt is comfy with it then that's great. If you're not comfortable screening her replies then perhaps you should tell her and she can ask someone else who would be. And there's no reason why you can't take a look at the website to make yourself more comfy with it.
