Compulsive Eating

I've been having a real problem with compulsive eating lately. It's a problem I've had most of my life (binge not purge). I started SBD on 1/1/04 and have lost 9 pounds, but I keep undermining my efforts by eating too much of the allowed foods.

My doctor put me on Wellbutrin for depression and to help with the compulsive eating. So far it's helping with one and not the other.

Does anyone else go through this? What has helped you?

Do you find that you have more problems with the binging during the winter months? The reason I ask is that it is one of the prominent side effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). My doctor and I are pretty sure I have SAD and, I can tell you, I have been pounding down the food since November. I can't seem to stop either. I did just start some "light therapy" so I hope that helps. Anyway, it seems that people with SAD eat out of control and mainly crave carbs. I also took Wellbutrin before. I did not find that it helped with compulsive eating although it did make me want to NOT eat certain things. I remember chocolate tasting kind of "off" when I was on Wellbutrin, so I just ate something else! I think it also causes that effect with cigarettes (which is why they market it as Zyban to smokers).

I eat compulsively as well....
I have tryed the figure out why but I have a really strange habit along with this.
BEWARE, this is weird !and quite embaressing and after readin your posts about there being a med for this behavior, I am a bit scared.

I get up almost everynight ( anywhere between 2-4am) and practically run to the kitchen to get somethig sweet.
I have a 18 month old that still gets up everynight so when he gets up, I go running!
But, (heres where it gets weird) I think there are times when I ate while asleep!

My kitchen is clean before I go to bed and I am the first one up in the morning. I have gotten up and seen a mess that Ihave made but seriously not remember eating it.
The nights my son wakes, I am sure I am awale cause sometimes, I have to change his diaper but, on the rare occaision he doesnt wake up I dont remember it!
Maybe this is my "eating" dimension. lol.

Another thing is, it is always cookies! AND... I remember times taking a swig of soda at this time. I no longer drink reg. soda adn drink so much water that I am not craving a drink just a cookie.
ANY thoughts?

Renee, I was just reading about a woman who gets up in the middle of the night to eat while she is still asleep. So far she has tried all types of remedies but non of them have worked. She tried not keeping food in her kitchen, but that didn't work, because she just went out to the store and bought some more (while she was 'asleep'). If you seriously think this is what is happening with you, you might want to talk with your doctor about it.

tw1nsmom, I have suffered from binge eating, but now that I have changed my lifestyle I don't seem to have any problems. For me it just took determination and desire to change my life. I hope that you are able to find answers to your problem. Good luck!

renee,
What you are describing is an actual disorder of some sort. I've read about it numerous times in the various women's magazines and I'm sure if you did an internet search you'd find all the information you need. You definitely should discuss with your doctor. I believe there is a medication for this.

Thank you for all of the kind replies. It's something I'm constantly trying to figure out.

Renee, I've heard about nighttime eating. I think they did a segment about it on one of those news show (20/20, Dateline...), so you're not alone.

I would probably say that I have a bigger problem in the winter, but it can happen anytime.

This is something I've been dealing with for a long time. I'm really determined to get this under control. I guess this is my first step. Other than my doctor, I've never told anyone about this problem. Thank you for listening.

i was thinking more about this after I posted and I came up with two senarios......
one is that perahps I feel it isn;t cheating if I am asleep
and the other is a sort of carb crave. perhaps I am not eating enough and my body actually makes me do this!
I will definitely look into this.
thanks all

There is a book you may be intersted in:

"Why Can't I stop Eating" by Debbie Danowski

She also has a website. Check out her photos-wow!!!!

There are certain disorders which dieting alone simply cannot fix. (I fit that catagory).
