complaints about no podcast dut to illness

I was shocked that Pete got hatemail
a friend of mine got a piece of hatemail once when he took a not to popular stand when he was on the school board.........it read..........mike, i cannot believe that you feel the way you do, i find it vile and ignorant. if it were up to me i would have you removed from the board and if possible the community as you should not be allowed around people. why dont you take your stupid ideas and, well, i am to much of a lady to tell you what to do with them....................................................................................love, mom

The secondary thread here is all a huge argument for paid sick time, of course, which is sorely lacking in many hourly wage jobs. In an economy like this, short-sighted (and dare I say nasty) employers will think nothing of having a call-in/get-fired policy, knowing they can easily replace that worker with someone else just as desperate for even a minimum wage job. It's not so easy just to go find another job with paid time off benefits under any circumstances these days, but especially if you're the sole provider for your kids. I'm so fortunate to be in a job where we're *encouraged* to stay home and use our sick time when we're sick. We don't get our coworkers sick, we recover faster, and we're back to productive levels that much more quickly. What I take for granted simply isn't the reality for many workers, though, and that's a problem with the system.

Interestingly enough......

A different thread debating "Do I take my kids out of school for Disney" was on the Families board awhile back devolved into a "Do teachers take days off for Disney?"

There were teachers (me included) who confessed to taking "sick" days to go on vacation. We were accused of all kinds of things: dishonesty, immoral behavior, and outright theft.

Maybe it's those same people!!!

Just stopping in to add a " Don't let the Ba _ _ _ _ ds get you down".

Oh, and to ask Rachelsmommie if they are hiring where she works. I am in Dallas and willing to drive!

Reading some of the comments here makes me realise how lucky we are here. My DH gets 12 sickies a year aswell as 10 family leave days (in case the kids are sick) plus 12 rostered days off and 4 weeks annual leave. He has a blue collar job and this is considered pretty standard in his industry and I guess we just take it for granted.

Its much the same here. By law its 4 weeks annual leave a year.

I get 5 weeks as the company I work for gives an extra week after 5 years service. We also get our birthdays off, work for the most part a 37.5 hour week and have the opportunity to do overtime which we get paid for or can take time in lieu. I get 6 days a year sick leave and it rolls over to the following year.

We also get boxes of fresh fruit delivered to help ourselves to during the day, a cafe style coffee machine, tea (various varieties), friday evening drinks, morning tea twice a month, petrol cards and a prize giving once a month where staff vote which two staff get $100 bonuses for exceptional work. Oh and we get a profit share once a year if the company is doing well.

Also my boss is fabulous, as an example, yesterday I had to have my poor old cat put to sleep so was a bit down and he just said, if you need to go home, go...

So why on earth would we not retain our staff and have everyone go the extra mile?

im jealous !! is the tax rate high there?
we pretty much get screwed in the US as far as benefits go, at least compared to both the Australian and New Zealand posters.... but then again we have some great things in the US also, like WDW !

Back OT, I think everyone here has pretty much summed it up. There's no reason to freak out or fly into an angry rage when a podcast isn't up. Sure I might be a little like 'Aw, that's too bad,' but I'm not gonna go nuts and write an angry letter ^^;

Seriously. *sighs* I was almost just as mad as Pete when I heard him say that.

Oh well. Brush 'em off guys.
You already go well out of your way to do an excellent job.

Maybe everyone who goes to work with contagious illnesses should give "The Stand" a read. Might change their minds ;)

My experience was (at my last job) the people who came in sick (hacking all day, sneezing, etc) didn't do so because we didn't get sick time -- most of them thought they were soooooo indispensable that the whole company would fall apart if they weren't there for a day or two. Used to drive me NUTS and I'd wish there was a quarantine room for them... especially since 99% of our job could be done from home.

As for nasty emails when there's no podcast -- that's just ridiculous :sad2:
