terminal - RCCL's looked like an old warehouse - very dark, dirty looking and depressing. Our welcome aboard photo was taken here. No "welcome to the Miller family", etc.
DCL wins this one hands down
ship - this was one of RCCL's older ships. It was almost the same size as the Disney ships - a little taller then Disney but not quite as long. (got to compare when they were docked side by side) Nothing special about it, a little too much turquoise - a little dated looking, but it was spanking clean and carpets were clean. We saw people working on wiping down railing, etc. a lot. no complaints about the ship. In fact I liked the extra open deck areas. this allowed for more sunning room and more deck chairs available for everyone in whatever they prefered -sun or shade. There was a neat plexiglass atrium at casual dining area where you could look up at beautiful blue sky or star lit sky.
still can't hold a candle to the beautiful lines of Disney ships, but we didn't have any complaints
ROOM - very small, but cruise was very cheap - did like the fact the ship had 2 main aisles of rooms like DCL but also side aisles running the other way. We were in one of these small side aisles and there was very little traffic. Only 4 little drawers and closet only 2/3 size of DCL's but we just left some stuff that wouldn't wrinkle much in our suitcases which slide easily under our beds. Shower was bigger then expected, but took us 24 hrs. to figure out how to get hot water in shower. BRRRR! All in all not bad for the $$, but I did miss having an ice bucket and a safe. We got a white bucket at a bar and just kept filling it at beverage station.
Disney wins this hands down, but again whole cruise cost for 2 cost less then for one person on DCL.
FOOD - RCCL had more variety and choices. several soups, several salads, several appitizers, entrees at sit down dinner. Everything was yummy. Casual dining was really good too. Disney desserts and pastries better. More people on RCCL dressed up for formal night. I'd say 95% dressed up. Disney snack food better. Also Disney room service menu better. I'd say this was a draw.
staff - just as warm and friendly and helpful as disney's. We got towel animals, waiter would bring extra entrees and desserts to try and he was funny. We did see a few sullen people but have seen it on DCL too. This was a draw. They do push drinks, but after day 1 they seemed to know who to approach and only occasionally were we bothered by someone pushing drinks.
this was a draw too
ENTERTAINMENT - missed Disney Dreams of course, but rest was much the same stuff. cooking class, belly flop contest, disco night, 50's night, match your mate, movies, etc. Of course I missed my sweetie pie, Mickey and his pals. But there were sail away parties, etc.
GUESTS- mixed bag - newlyweds, singles, everything else, older guests, kids, etc. Not as many kids as DCL but one little boy we spoke to loved the kids club and showed me a pin he'd made. His parents were pleased with club, but did say it isn't free in the evening like disney's.
NORWALK VIRUS
My daughter contacted this at the end of day 2. She spent rest of cruise confined to our room and eventually in ship hospital. I was confined to room for 24 hrs. but never got sick. There were others with virus too and 2 ship workers did nothing but roam around disinfecting. They even wiped down the slot machines. On our last day at sea, the seas were so bad even a lot of the crew was sick. They only opened one restaurant and the medical area was packed. I never got seasick thanks to Bonine. the ship's dr. told me the secret is to take it before you get sick.
we ended our cruise with dd being taken off ship in an ambulance as soon as we docked. the ships dr had misdiagnosed what was an irritated stomach from all the sickness she had with the virus. We were offered another cruise and we are going to take it. I was scared to death, but I think his misdiagnosis came because he was exhausted from treating the 100s of seasick and the ones who had virus. One person told us about 25 people had virus which is a small # out of 3,000 people.
I won $900 in casino which more then paid for this cruise. Just wish the Norwalk Virus would go away!!
Sorry this was so long, but for so long I was afraid to try one of these lower priced deals. I'd do it again in a heart beat.

sandee,

Sounds like you had a little of everything on your voyage .. and too much of some things!! You did not mention whihc ship you were on , but it sounds like the Sovereign of the Seas. The "Voyager" class ships cabins are much bigger.. a little smaller thatn Disney's but much bigger than the Sovereign/Monarch/Majesty ships.. Our son has also enjoyed both kids' programs very much. I agree that the menu on RCCL is more varied... I would give the nod to RCCL....

Hope everyone is feeling better....

Sorry to hear you and your daughter had a run-in with the NLV.

From your description of the hallways it sounds like you had an inside room?

We were on the Monarch of the Seas. Julie and I nicknamed it the "Ugly Duckling".

Yes you're right Dave. It was an inside cabin. I did get to see what would be a level 8 on DCL and it wasn't much bigger- just had a window. I had 2 free frequent flier tickets sitting around thanks to the good folks at Southwest air and the total cruise cost including port charges, taxes, etc. for the two of us was $630. Of course there were gratuities and other small costs, but still a lot of vacation for a little amt. of money. I have seen deals like this so many times and thought there had to be a catch, but until she took ill we were having a ball. We were at Key West right before the cold weather and Cozumel was down right hot. Can't believe I'm home watching it lightly snow as I'm writing. Glad I have my Disney cruise in March to think about. Just hope my DD's problems don't prevent her from going.

We have cruised RCCL and really enjoyed! It's not Disney, but hey, when you can cruise for a total of $315pp for a week cruise, what can you say?! So sorry about your daughter's tummy problems. I sure hope she is feeling better.
What a class act - 2 FREE cruises!!
Are you listening Disney??? ;)

Thanks for the comparison! RCCL is a class act!

Was this a 4 day? Our first cruise was on RCCL, also on an older ship, and we loved it! The price, $1100 for a week for 2, got us to try something we thought we'd hate. But for the price, how can you go wrong? Although I am sailing on the Magic next, I can't wait to try RCCL again.

I hope your daughter is feeling better soon.

I just spoke to my daughter and she said her doctor is puzzled how the ships dr. came up with such a serious diagnosis when stomach xray the next day was clear. The problem the ships dr said she had could have meant hours of surgery and months of recovery. Her family dr. said the symptoms the ship dr. said he saw just couldn't "clear up " over night. I do know it was so scary being alone with 6 pcs. of luggage (2 were carry ons) and your only child is being wisked away to a strange hospital. I even emailed my boss and told him I might be out for weeks and to go ahead and put me on FMLA leave.
Anyone living in California, the RCCL ship we were on for 5 nights
is being refurbished and sent to Calif. for cruises from there some time in June. It really wasn't a a bad ship. If Julie hadn't contacted the Norwalk virus to get this whole thing started it would have been one of the best and most fun vacations I've ever had.

Sandee......I'm mostly curious about the shows. Disney shows are so "family friendly", and rated G.......what about the shows on RCCL. Of course, DCL has the adult clubs where things get slightly more risque, but other than that, there was nothing I'd cover my dd's (11) eyes/ears for. What kind of shows did RCCL during the "family hours"?

So sorry that happened to you. So, when are you going to use your two free cruises on RCCL?

Tina

Some years back, we travelled RCCL and had David Brenner as our headline entertainer.

He was laugh out loud funny, and I think I would rate him pg-13.

None of the other shows we saw would rate above PG, and would all not be offensive to the most delicate of temperments.

They were of high quality, IMHO.

sandee,

I wasn't going to post this, but my husband got sick on the Magic with the virus. He started with the diarhea on Grand Cayman morning. We woke up at 6AM so we could be ready, eat, and meet for our morning excursion. Near rhe end of the tour he knew he definitely wasn't feeling well, so we went to the ships doctor. In the office filling out the paperwork, he broke his 17 yr with vomiting streak. Some streak! Doctor gave him regland and pills to take back to the cabin and quarantined him for 72 hrs. I was aloud out and never got it. He was about 90% better in 24hrs and 95% in 48 hours. The next day after Grand Cayman was Cozumel where we flew home at DCL expense. DCL gave us a vochure for the amount that we paid for our cruise as long as we sail within 1 yr. I'd like to go tomorrow, but hubby can't take off until October. We did have a nice day in Key West and the day at sea, so two days of cruising before we got off the ship. I can't believe we had "almost similar" trips.

When are you rebooking? Wouldn't it be funny if you booked the same sailing as us but on RCCL? To bad it's not with Disney.

Tina

Sandee, i was reading your post comparing the two lines. I feel the same way, im afraid to try another ship after three disney cruises, the if the price is right$$ and yours seem great. Where did you find that great price? I check all the sites, but like you, a little afraid when the price is so low. Sorry to hear about your daughter, we sailed on the 11-10-02 wonder just before all of the outbreaks of norwalk, thank god we missed it.

Forgot to add, we are from southern maryland, calvert county. This is my daughters log in name, and she did the disney college program last semester. Are you the woman with the daughter in the program also? Leslie H.

I have sailed on RCCL and DCL and had great cruises on both. The newer ships on RCCL have great cabins and have so much to offer. Service and staff are great on both and bend over backwards to make sure you have a great time. We thought the food offerings were better on RCCL and we do enjoy the casino. Don't worry about taking a chance with RCCL you will be glad you did. Great prices can be found check out mytravelco.com if you sign up for their seasavers they send you outstanding prices about once a week on many cruises. Prices have come down so much since there are so many available cabins now with all the big ships out there.

We're in northern MD. Cecil County. We're 5 mins. from Newark Delaware
I liked the casino too. My DD went to a class the 1st day that taught you how to play roulette, craps, card games. She came back to the room and said they'd taught them with fake chips, but after the class they had the casino tables to themselves for 1/2 hr. if they wanted to try them for real. She'd won $85. and you would have thought it was a million. She and I were in the casino later and she won $50 more. She said the dealers were very friendly and very patient with the ones who didn't know all the rules for these types of games. I don't know if I mentioned it, but I won $900 on the slot machines.
I only saw a couple shows before Julie got sick, but they were both family type shows. One was a comedian I'd seen on Letterman once. He did a family show early in the evening on day one and an adult show at 11 p.m. the 2nd night . Even then it wasn't really too bad. Just a couple mild cuss words. I really wanted to see one show that the crew put on. I heard it was funny, but I was a basket case by that point. I am not a good one to ask to compare shows between ships because Hercules is one of the few Disney movies I didn't like so I wasn't crazy about the show. Also after seeing the shows on 4 Disney cruises it was nice to have a change. I found this RCCL trip on Vacationstogo.com I was so afraid when Mike, one of their cruise counselors called me. I thought he'd try to tell me I should "upgrade" to a better room, etc. because we got the cheapest one which was just a guarantee. The room we ended up with wasn't the lowest catagory but next to the lowest, so I guess we did kind of get an "upgrade" for free.
Hopkins, I wish we were getting a free Disney cruise too. I guess I sound ungreatful but I can't tell you how scared I was for my daughter when dr. said she had a bowel obstruction - there is no price a person can put on that. Also nobody seemed to care that we were stuck in that room. The letter we got said RCCL apologized for my husband and I having our vacation upset by illness. Whoever wrote it didn't even bother to see who was ill. Nobody offered to fly us home. RCCL hasn't offered to pay hospital bill, ambulance bill, infirmary bill for bowel obstruction treatment - which were all unneccesary due to misdiagnosis. I will take DCL any day for being a class act over RCCL. Of course if she hadn't gotten ill I would say it was a wonderful, wonderful vacation.

sandee,

Good gosh, they didn't fly you home. Did you have travel insurance? I understand now why it's offered and will always take it. Did you check your health insurance policy at home if you are covered on travel? I'm glad it wasn't what the ships doctor thought, but the cost of all that is pricey. I'm glad it was just the virus and not the obstruction. So very stressful. I still can't believe we were on the ship and left early. Cozumel would have been a nice day. We were going to Tulum, dinner at Pancho's Backyard and Cozumel mini-golf. We made reservations for 10/11/03 (earliest DH could get off of work). Have you made your, yet?

Your friend,
Tina :)

Hi Sandee!
Another Cecil Countian(?) here. I'm glad I ran into your post although I'm sorry to hear about your experience. I'm in the midst of a mental tug-of-war between a possible Cat 11 on DCL or a suite (C) on RCCL. My husband and I loved RCCL when we cruised 10  yes 10 years ago! My only problem is worrying whether my children will miss out on the whole DCL experience with characters, clubs, etc. I don't want them to be disappointed nor do I want to feel guilty for taking a nicer cabin on RCCL. By the way they will be 4 & 5 when we decide which cruise to take this fall. I hope I'm not changing the subject too much but I would appreciate a little insight on this since we're talking about both cruise lines. Thanks for ANY help making this decision!!

At one time I think I was the only regular Marylander on this board...that was a long time ago. Never thought I'd see another Cecil Countain...I live in North East but the next house down the road is in Rising Sun.

There were a lot of activities for kids. Since we were adults and then my DD got so sick I didn't pay a lot of attention to just what they were, but I did save my daily Compass which listed daily activities. I'm going to PM you a list of activities when I get home from work. I know the kids we saw were having a ball. One lady said they'd done DCL and her kids were a little intimidated by the Characters and the lg. # of kids in the clubs. She said there were fewer in RCCL clubs. I know my DGr.Dtr. loved kids group on 2 cruises and on our last there were some boys who teased her about her weight and she refused to go back. That could happen anywhere and she is looking forward to our March cruise with Disney. I did think it was neat that on the last night when they leave the survey sheets out for the parents there was also one for kids to rate food, activites and clubs.
