Compared to when you were a kid what items don't stores carry anymore?

I have three things.

1) bowling balls and shoes - these used to be carried by K-mart. Now the only place that seems to carry them is Dick's Sporting goods and the selection is small. We joined a Kids-bowl-free program for the summer and had to purchase the kids bowling shows online.

2) Models - No one seems to carry these anymore. You can find some at Wal-mart but not like when I was a kid. You could get them at K-mart, the five and dime, etc.

3) Trains - No one seems to carry accessories anymore. You can still by train sets, but I can't find anyone (other than model shops) that carries cars, houses, etc.

candy cigarettes

perhaps not exactly what you were looking for but it is all I can think of off the top of my head

Astro Pops!! I asked about them at a Cracker Barrel a few weeks ago and no one knew what I was talking about.

Also, sewing supplies. At a couple of our Wal-Marts, they have taken the sewing dept out.

That was my first thought too:rotfl2:

I used to LOVE Astro Pops. Thanks for the memory.

It is getting hard to find just regular Silly Putty.
We always grab Chinese Jump Ropes when we see them because you can never be sure they will be around.
plain, single blade pocket knives (hardware stores still have them sometimes)

Calendars from the 1960s! What's up with that?!?

Don't most bowling alleys have a pro shop now that has a ton of balls, bags, and supplies?

My big beef with stores is that my house must be the ONLY house ever made with the size of air filters my house takes. I always have to special order them.

Hobby Lobby has a pretty good selection on both of these items if you have one near you.

Bub's Daddy Gum

Koala Yummies

Upper 10

Indian Pumpkin Seeds

Wacky Packages

Hot Dog Gum

More recently I have not been able to find Vlassic Tabasco Pickles anywhere in the Chicago suburbs. My DH got hooked on these about 3 years ago and about a year later, all of the stores around here (Jewel, Meijer, Dominicks, Food 4 Less, Ultra...) stopped carrying them. I have to stock up at the Wal-Mart in the WI Dells when we go up to our lake house!

So many of these are bringing back memories! We were just talking about Clackers not too long ago.

Does anyone remember the bird that would bob back and forth like it was taking a drink?

I'll date myself. Penny candy. When I was a kid I could fill a small paper bag for a nickel.

I can't remember the brand (it was White Rose or 4-C) but it was a liquid iced tea concentrate.

I remember when you could buy guns and ammunition at Walmart! :scared1: The Kmart used to sell bullets, arrows and guns. (I'm not sure if they were BB's or not!)

It is getting difficult to find normal pantyhose at stores. I buy a pair every 4 months or so and my Target doesn't sell them anymore--they have Spanx style stuff but not normal pantyhose or even knee his. I have resorted to a local CVS or Walgreens for this.

It is getting difficult to find film developing anywhere now. The BJ's, Best Buy (yes, Best Buy used to do it) Wegmans, Target have all stopped processing film around here. CVS, Walgreens and an out of the way Target in another town will do it.
