Hey! Another article published... updates: parking is now $20 and other things...

I know it’s been said many times, in very different ways, but you’re going to spend a lot of money on a Disney vacation. Your friends and family members are quick to judge and have preconceived notions that you must be putting a second mortgage on your house to pay for all of it…

Nicely done, Mike!

I liked the article and is a good example of how lots of things cost money and when you consider all the entertainment a day at a Disney park provides - from rides to shows to parades to fireworks - the cost makes sense

I guess the one difference is that you can do a sporting event on the cheap. Even for the NY teams you can get into a baseball game for $10-$15 .... There is just one "entrance" level for WDW

I've always said the same thing. Although, I don't know many families of 4 that plan to attend 10 MLB games this year ...I'd say most would consider going to 3-4 would be a good year. Then again, I'm a Red Sox fan so prices are significantly higher -like $50 for parking!

About 10-years ago I took my younger daughter to a game(she was around 8) -bought the tickets online for around $75 each, paid $50 or so to park, bought a nice Ortiz jersey for her, got us a couple hot dogs and drinks. I'm in it for about $300 at this point. Getting the hot dogs fixed up, I noticed the game had just started ...get to our seats and sit down, Top of 1st nobody out -Red Sox down 4-0. Okay, no big deal I'm bringing her for the experience. Maybe 20 minutes later I look at her and she's not eating her hot dog ..."I don't feel too good," she says.(imagine the thoughts running through MY head). I tell her we can stay one more inning and if she still feels sick we can leave -fortunately it passed. Ortiz hits a game tying home run in the 9th and the game winner in the 10th or 11th ...she was SOOO excited. Got her home around 2AM -school night! Great memories!!!

I would equate this the way I know best. Season tickets (8 games plus 2 preseason games no one wants to see) to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Tickets $1149
Parking $40 per game ($400)
Tailgating $35 per game ($350)

So I'm running about $1900 per person for about 60 hours of entertainment. That's on the low side and assuming we didn't sell any games. Yes that would be spread out over a season of nearly 5 months, but it is hardly a vacation and doesn't include only one real meal.

The parking and tailgating amounts above aren't per person are they?! Sweet baby Jebus if they are!!

parking is per car, but tailgating is per person.
To clarify though the tailgating I'm talking about (The Green Legion) is a hard ticket event held at a bar and includes beer and buffet food for 2-3 hours.

Oh ok, I thought tailgating was something else. It's not a term we use here that I know of

That's a lot of beer. You'd have to understand Eagles fans, Jes. ;) ;)
Eagles fans here are from Western Australia, so they're a different breed too ;)

We have the West Coast Eagles in our football league (the AFL)

I need to explain this. First I am not an Eagles fan, my wife is a season ticket holder though. I have tagged along for tailgates and it is nothing like going to New York or Washington DC. Soccer Hooligans don't come close to this. An increased amount of police has helped, but they put jail cells and a court in the stadium. Not only have I been asked to put my shirt on, but also my pants...in sub freezing weather. I've seen you Aussie fans, you have no idea of how bad this place gets. Imagine Mardi Gras with free LSD being given out.

A WDW trip vs. a sporting event? Closest comparison I can make is Thunderdome.

Wait a minute you have to pay to tailgate? Here is Wisconsin I think people would riot if they charged for that. Tailgating is like a sacred thing here.

That's not a true tailgate then.

Our Milwaukee Brewers ran a deal this month where you could go to every home game in April for $49.99. The Brewers are running a lot of deals for fans this year due to the fact they aren't supposed to be very good ( hey we are 3-3 right now!). Anyways the Green Bay Packers on the other hand is a hard to get ticket and is very expensive that's of course because they play at historic Lambeau field and Seaskn ticket holders take up the vast majority of seats.

Tailgates take place outside, on the tailgate of your pickup. Although, the inside bar party sounds more appealing than tailgating in south Texas in September.

Anywhoo...when I said we were taking our kids to WDW for the first time in 2007, one of the other moms expressed disbelief, on several occasions, that we would spend so much money on vacation. She asked me about it once and then she kept bringing it up, "must be nice" or "things you can do when you have money" or "but some people get to go to Disney." Blah Blah Blah

Finally, I asked her, "Didn't you just take Ashley to see Hannah Montana?"

"Yes," she answered.

"How much were the tickets?"

"They were about $120 a piece with all the fees and tax," She said proudly.

"How long was the concert?"

"About an hour and a half."

I said, "You realize that cost more than a day at Disney World (this was 2007) with enough left over for food all day? The park opens at 8 and closes at midnight. That is 16 hours of entertainment and food for the same price you paid for that hour and half and you are still hungry."

We make choices.
