I played around with the tripod last night. I thought I might take the head off and put a different head on from another tripod, but the head on the new tripod doesn't come off. However, I did figure a way to take verticle shots with it. Its not the most stable but will work. I just have to tilt the head with the camera in the horizontal position so that it would be taking a picture of the ground, then turn the camera itself. Like I said, it doesn't make it the most stable tripod in that position, but I don't plan on using it like that all that time. It will work in a pinch. Plus its a lot easier to cart this tripod around as it folds down to almost 10 inches smaller than my regular tripod. It holds up to 3.3oz. My D50 with the 18-70mm lens on it is 2.8oz (I weighted it with the scale I use with my homebrew).
Just thought I'd update if interested.
