Compact Fluorescent bulb disappointment...

Fluorescent lights kill my eyes, I dread the day im forced to use them.

We have a large one in the basement, I hate it.

I find office florescents hurt my eyes but not these ones. I wonder why?

I use the CF bulbs in several places in my house, but I am more excited about the possiblity of replacing my incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs. They are still a bit pricey for me and I have heard reports that some people notice a distinct flicker with the LED bulbs. I'm sure that the manufacturers will eventually work this problem out.

I have had very poor luck with CF bulb life, but probably because I have very few light fixtures where the bulb can be in the proper orientation.

Right now LED light are too directional, but they will work that out. Once they get the LEDs better and cheaper you will be able to run strings all over the place. I can't wait either.

I just heard somewhere that these particular fluoro bulbs should not be placed upside down. I think the box on one of mine even said so. I'll check at Home Depot for you next time I'm there. Maybe the lighting manager knows.

When I replaced the dead bulb it said right on the base "this side up" which indicated the screw-in part points up. I replaced it with a GE brand. It'll be interesting to see how long this one lasts. The other brand was something "bright". How ironic!

I guess they make specific fluoro flood type bulbs designed to be upside down. Didn't know that. With that out of the equation, I would now guess a heat build up issue.

Oh, I just put in two cf bulbs in the hallways, they hang upside down. I dont remember even reading that on the box not to do that but I dont really like the color of the light. (If that makes sense) Actually most of the lights in our house hang upside down, dont they in most homes? Well, I will see how long they last!

Me too!!! I never even noticed on the box if it said do not hang upside down.:confused3 All my lights need the bulbs to hang upside down.

Okay, I went and unscrewed two of mine. They DON'T say not to turn upside down, so maybe it was just the one brand I bought. It does say, however, not to use in a recessed fixture! But these are just the regular ones. I get the impression John is using a specific flood type one made for recessed fixtures, so I don't know.

We have them all over our house because they put off so much less heat. When we found the kind that go in our recess can lights in the kitchen it was wonderful! Recess can lights put off a LOT of heat! But with the fluorescents they don't! But you're right, they don't last long at all.
