well, let's see...I commute 60 mi. each way to work, and fill my tank twice a week.
2 x ±$30 = $60/week x 52 (give or take) = ± $3120/yr.
my car was new last June, and now has >37K miles on it...
4 oil changes @ $30 (being conservative) = $120
minor service @ $100
brakes @ $150 (approx.)
major service @ $250
service on car = $620
so due to my commute, I spend about $3700 extra a year (maybe a little less b/c you have to account for personal driving)
I think the most important thing to consider is how important your time is to you. I will be starting a new job in 2 weeks that is 7 miles from my house. I couldn't be more excited to end my freeway driving and to gain back 2 hours of my life each day...
depends on your car's gas mileage. My car gets 24 mi. to the gal. I drive 75 miles one way. I spend average of $100 a week on gas. My car holds 7 quarts of oil and I only change it about every 6 weeks or 5-6k miles driven. My owners manual says to go 7500 miles between oil changes. A oil change for my car at a typical place is $50. My dh found a great local tire bus. owner that we take the oil and filter and he charges us $12!!!! I spend about $500 a year on tires. It all depends on your car.
40k miles= about 5k just in gas annually
the thing I hate the most about my commute is the 3 hr minimum a day in my car!! I'd much rather that time spent w/ds5!!
