There was recently a thread on this either here or on Community Board in case you'd like to look - I think it got decently long. Money seemed to be the main thought
Anyway, my children mostly received money, but were given a few non-monetary gifts from close friends/family (either instead or in addition to $)
Our niece's Communion is soon. She is our Goddaughter also. We will likely give her a small gift as a remembrance and money
99.9% give check or money, maybe a savings bond. Usually only the parents, grandparents, or godparents give religious tokens (how many bibles and crosses does one need). ETA, I see you are in NJ - definitely money.

For my DS8's best friend we did a share of Disney Stock from oneshare. Th eboys have known each other since birth and it's something this particular child would really dig (being a stock holder).
My DS made his First Communion last spring and also received quite a bit of money, but each person gave him $20-25; I think $50 might be too much to give, but that's just MHO. My son also received a kid's illustrated Bible with abridged stories from the Old & New Testaments & $30 in Disney Dollars that he'll take on our trip in a couple of weeks .
