Common sense, please!

Aloha!

Please everyone!
Use common sense on your visits to the parks! This latest death (which MAY BE from the heat) prompts me (as a 30+ year veteran visitor to WDW) to just remind everyone to take it S-L-O-W during HOT or CROWDED conditions!

On our visit this summer I witnessed SO MANY people OF ALL AGES who were trying to tell their families that they had HAD ENOUGH and needed to rest. Kids do it by crying or having tamtrums ...Adults do the same!

Take a break...go back to your hotels...(Yes...this IS a plug for staying on-site if at all possible!) I know that especially for 1st time visitors, it seems you MUST do it ALL EVERY DAY!

And...begin your trip back to your hotel an hour BEFORE you think someone has had enough! By the time you walk, exit, bus or monorail, walk again....people can be on the verge of collapse!

Believe me, you'll make better memories (and ensure that everyone will want to return some day for ANOTHER visit) if everyone just SLOWS DOWN!!!

Be safe, friends :wave2:

Amen to that! Sound advice for everyone.

I really don't undrstand how people can go all day long in the parks without a break in the heat of summer. They must feel awful! There's no way I could do it.

I only suffered some heat effects once and it was in Universal (I'll whisper that name, sorry). I felt faint, and cold and clammy. Had to sit down on the ground right in the middle of a line. We left straight away but it took me a few hours to feel ok again. I think I hadn't taken in enought fluids that day. Never made that mistake again.

Take it slow everyone, walk in the shade when you can, and go into every AC building you can find :goodvibes.

Also doesn't hurt to sit and take a breather or two on your way back to the monorail, bus, etc.

And can I just suggest hats...for everyone!!

My husband and I were at an NFL training camp over the weekend and the sun was just beating down...and sitting two feet away from us were twin boys of about 2 or 3 years old. Blond as can be with no hats on. Parents need to understand how dangerous this is. The kids were miserable and yet the parents just sat their with them. My husband and I just looked at each other and said "no way". We would not be bringing our young children to something like that...they're miserable.

Exactly!!!

Like my dh says "Don't be a commando, for goodness sakes WDW will always be there". lol ;)

Disney is one LONG walk, it isn't like going to your local zoo or whatnot, it can wear out the best of us.

When we go we ALWAYS take a break , and we always rent a vacation home with its own pool since it is nice to float around and rest without worrying about hoards of hotel guests plunging in. :earboy2:

Hear Hear!

I understand too, that for some people this is a once and a lifetime trip, so they feel they have to be in the park all day to make it worth it. If that is the case, and you don't want to go back, then at least take a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNGGGG lunch in an air conditioned restaurant. Somehow, get off your feet, cool down and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate yourself. If you have little ones and also don't want to head back, bring a change of clothes for them and let them play in the jumping water fountains or from the spray of one of the rides (i.e. SM).

But like the OP said, the best option is to head back to your hotel for a rest/swim. As all of the guides say, PLAN to relax and it will be a much more enjoyable trip.

::yes:: Hear Hear!

We are definitely planning on taking afternoon breaks and hitting as many air conditioned buildings as possible (good excuses to browse shops and eat food ;) )

very good advice. it's too bad not everyone is as smart and well informed as we are. i guess the excitement of going to wdw is too much for some people.
they suffer from bad judgement. it's fortunate that i never make an error due to inexperience. from now on i'm definitely leaving the park 1 hour brfore i think anyone might be getting tired. just to be safe. we'll also drink one hour before we're thirsty, go eat one hour before we are hungry , and change my son's diaper one hour before it is dirty. our trips are going to be so much better now.

Wow! Guess I really didn't make myself clear...I was trying to reach the many NEW visitors to WDW (and perhaps these boards).

I was referring to those times when someone in the group has ALREADY indicated extreme fatigue or overheating...rather than insist upon 'JUST ONE MORE' attraction/line/hour of waiting...begin to head back sooner rather than later. Many NEWBIES may not realize just how long it can be from any starting point to the air-conditioned finish line at WDW! Distances appear very small on those guide maps and waiting times for transportation add to the problem.

And while SOME may find this suggestion silly, others may find it helpful.... :teacher:

Have a MAGICAL day!

Keep in mind also that the first day in the parks are usually the most energetic for visitors, so you can easily run around all day without feeling it. When we hit MK on our first vacation day we had tons of energy around lunchtime, but as everyone suggested we went back to our resort and rested. At first it actually did seem like a bit of a waste, but we found out later on it was definitely worth it. When we headed back into the park later in the evening, you could easily see so many of the faces of those who didn't take a break. We on the other hand were well rested and were able to do everything we wanted to do without any worries about dragging our feet or towing any our kids with us sleeping or crying. So whatever you do, take that break even if you feel like you don't need it. Trust me.

Hi!

I absolutely agree with what you said. We were there in June 28th - July7th and boy was it hot and crowded. We would get to the park early and return back to the resort around 1-2 in the afternoon and spend a bit relaxing. Then we would head back out and enjoy the parades and the fireworks. It worked very well for us and the kids enjoyed themselves!
