Common name , but a different spelling?

My middle name is Jeanne. My MIL INSISTS on spelling it Jean. But then again, she spells her grandmother name as Gramy instead of Grammy!

Our DD is Carly. My father thought we were going to spell it Carli, for some reason. I said I didn't think ending her name with an "i" sounded very professional when she became an adult. I kept picturing that spelling with a heart-shaped dot above the "i".

The drawback I see to giving a child a unique spelling to their name is that they stand a good chance of having it mispronounced their entire life. I'll take the good old-fashioned way and spell it commonly anyday.

lol mad4mickey we have the same thing in our tag "i'm not crazy i'm just a little unwell" i luv that song

my name is alisa (uh-LEE-suh trying to spell it phonetically)and people are constantly pronouncing alyssa or even alicia

My sister's neighbor has a son named Steev'n instead of Steven.

Lisabeth (pronounced Lizbet) which is a form of Elizabeth

Nothing too unusual - just Tamie instead of Tammy.

No offence to the Tammy's out there, but I kind of like having the "ie". It's usually spelled wrong and I don't bother to correct people, just say it correctly, that's all that matters.

Tamie

My first name is Lois and sometimes folks will pronounce it Louis. DD12's name is Lora and she'll get all kinds of pronounciations there... Lorna, Laura, Lori. DD14's name is Melinda. Sometimes she'll get Belinda. Her middle name is Courteney... imagine the more traditional spelling would come into play if she used her name as opposed to just her initial. DH's middle name was supposed to be Philip but when he entered the Navy it somehow was processed as Phillip and then when we started our adoption paperwork for DDs some would come up with one l and some with two l's. It had to be one way or the other, so he just had his name changed to two l's.

Yep. My name is spelled Tammi -- I've only seen it spelled that way one other time. I've gotten every variation I can think of: Tammy is most common, Tammie probably next most, Tami, Tamy, and even people insisting it's Tamara or some variation on that. Nope. Just Tammi. I almost *never* get someone who spells it correctly. Even when I spell it out, I usually get either Tami or Tammie. ;) I've given up correcting most people.

It's Karel but pronounced Carol. It's a family name, Czech - european and means Charles, so I'm named for my grandfather. I like it and don't think of it being spelled different - I have to remember to tell people ie it's normal for me and I don't see me as Carol. A lot of times I get Karen because people don't see the last letter. I always get a lot of comments on it.

My sisters name is Caron, pronounced Ca'ron. She gets Karen all the time. Her daughters name is Jianna, pronounced with a soft a. People call her Gina.

I don't have too much trouble with my name other than people always try to spell it with Sh instead of Ch.

My name (Amy ) is quite boring. Maybe that is why I (we) have named our kids uncommon (or what I thought was uncommon) names.

Caeleh (Kay-Lee) never has been pronunced correct. We get a lot of Kay-La.

Kayd (Cade) came from our New Zealand foreign exchange students brother's name. I always loved it, and said that would be the name of my son if I had one. Funny story about his name: After he was born he was in the NICU (only 9.5 pounder in there!), the nurse on duty told us she had never seen such a unique spelling of Katie (kay-dee--Kayd). I asked if she had changed HIM yet, because that would have told her he was a boy. We all laughed about that!!!

The twins:

Cullen--always said Colin when we introduce him to people. I have to spell it to most people.

Kelton--only funny story with his name: The twins have not been gaining weight (8 mos. and weigh 11 lbs) , so we have been seeing a nutritionist. The day we were admitted to the hospital, the dr. told us that he will always remember Kelton's name because he looks like his name Kelton--Skeleton. He was trying to be funny. It does not sound as funny written down as he made it sound in person.

Footnote: Twins are gaining weight now--13 lbs at almost 9 months! Yea:bounce: :bounce:

I wanted to name my daughter Carrie, but I wanted it to end in an "i" since my name and all my sisters' names end in "i" (all 4 of them, LOL).

I tried spelling it all different ways and came up with Kari. I used my little sister's middle name...because of her insistence (hey she was 7 at the time). So my daughter ended up with Kari Leigh.

She is almost 24 now and hates it. She can never find anything with the correct spelling on it (bracelets, etc....). But I love it.

Vicki

My name is Kelli. My mom wanted to end it in an "i" so that, when written, everyone would know I'm a girl. It's weird having a name that can be both male or female, but the spelling does help. My oldest sister is Sheri. We both get them spelled wrong. My husband is Stephen, and sometimes is called Stef - fen (ef instead of long e v). My little sister is Christal (Krystal). She likes that it's spelled different.

I kinda did the same to my kids , My DD middle name is Dee-Ann , my DS name is spelled a little different Derick.

This has been fun reading all of these !

My name is Chris and Dh is Kelly. I can't even count the times people think I'm Kelly and Dh is Chris. At restaurants if DH pays with his credit card they always bring it back and present it to me instead; at a party once we were introduced as a couple upon arrival, hours later we realized people had our names backwards-lol.

Our kids are Kaycie, named after both of us and Will(William) which is a family name.

We named our daughter Natalee.. My wife's first name ends in a double ee. DD's middle name, Janelle, is the combination of the first syllable of my wife and my mil's first names (not unusual in spelling, just the origin I guess....)

My wife had to really sell me on the double ee. I kept insisting how hard it would be to get the name things since they are all spelled Natalie.. :)

my name is far from common, but my youngest DS is Lachlan, not common as such, but a regular kinda of name.

He gets so mad when people ( non Aussies) can't say it & when it's spelt wrong... Lauchlin, Locklan, Lacklan........you name it he's had it :(

Michele---with one "L"

I have met a lot of other "Michele"s though

My first name is Suzette. It is pretty easy to pronounce, just really uncommon. My daughter's name is Rachel. Up until we wrote it on the birth certificate, my husband thought it was supposed to be spelled Racheal. My youngest son's name is Ian pronounced E-an. Sometimes people say I-an instead. My best friend's kids names are Mathew, and Rebbecka. Both of those are spelled different.
