Oh, get over yourself, Carly Roach.

If it comes to valuing human life (i.e. my children) over a big metal machine (your car), then human life wins every time.

I will not leave my children in the car to return a cart, and I am neither lazy nor rude.

The "life lessons" and statements you've made have nothing to do with this topic.

It is lazy because you can bring your kids to the corral to put the cart away and teach them how to be respectful of others.

Who ever knew that shopping was such a potentially dangerous experience for some children?

I have heard it all before. I will not leave my kids in the car while I return the cart because:

A. They could suffer/pass out/die in the extreme heat while being left in there for 10 seconds
B. Somebody could kidnap them
C. Somebody could carjack my car
D. My car could explode.

In addition I will not take my children with me to return my cart because:

A. The parking lot is full of crazy people.
B. The parking lot is full of crazy drivers.
C. It might be rainy/hot/cold/snowing and I refuse to subject my children to that
D. I am incapable of handling my children for the short walk to return the cart.

I wonder how these poor women manage to shop under such circumstances and how on earth they manage to get their kids out of the car, get a cart and get into the store but are suddenly incapable of reversing the process when they are done.

Here in my area for well over 20 years we have had a coin operated system. You pay for your cart and get your money back when you return it. If all these lazy, holier than thou mothers had to pay for their cart they'd suddenly manage to find a way to get that cart back just like all the moms around here do.

To gather them from the cart corrals. Not to chase them all around the parking lot wherever the wind happens to send them.

To me, it's all the sense of entitlement. It just blows my mind, the sense of entitlement of people these days. Even if it WAS someone's job to chase carts all over the place, why not help someone out by putting it where it BELONGS? You really don't have an extra 30 seconds in your day to return a cart?

Uhm, actually. No. Our local supermarket doesn't have carrels, but they do have a couple of nice young men who are mentally challenged who run down carts, bag groceries, and help people who need it with loading their groceries into the car.

Not all the grocery stores here have carrels. Most don't. It's different in different parts of the country.

In some places it is an expectation that you will walk your own cart back to the store or put it in a corral. In others the expectation is that someone will gather up your cart.

But some people are stuck on an opinion so strongly they refuse to consider any other alternatives.

Even on something this silly.

And this topic, I think, should be banned b/c it is every bit as devisive and argumentative as religion and politics.

Actually no....

My Publix also does NOT have any cart corrals. NONE. I'll take photos the next time I am there.

They used to have 2 which were at the very end of the parking lot (so they were usually further away than the store entrance!) about 6 rows apart.

Our lot has 8 rows. The old corrals were at the very ends of rows 2 and 7. That is it.

They have employees who walk you out and return your cart. If on the off chance you don't have someone walk you out the 'bagger' who is returning to the store will take your cart.

And frankly, I'd like to know where all these cart damaged cars are. In my 18 years of owning a car I have never had it damaged by a cart. And I've lived in 7 states so it isn't like I haven't gotten around to different areas of the country.

I have one right now and it's a big dent, not a small one and I saw it happen. I wasn't even at the grocery store, I was at work. It gets extremely windy here in Nebraska and that cart was going very fast traveling from one parking lot to mine to hit my van. I don't buy into the "I have kids and they are my first priority" bit either. I have 3 kids and I've always gotten the cart back to the corral (minus the times they plowed the snow into the corrals). And I believe they say you should put your kids in last, in case someone wants to steal your car and your kids are already in it.

Rationalize all you want, but it comes back to being lazy, being inconsiderate, or both.

Honestly, I think you need to get over it. I think you are using having kids an easy excuse to not put your cart back. What in the world do you think will happen in the 10 seconds it takes you to put your cart back? Either lock you kids in the car, take them with you, or park next to the cart corral. You are not endangering your children by putting your cart back. Please.

Yes- using your kids as an excuse not to return a cart makes you lazy AND rude!! You walk them there to get the cart why can't you walk them back to return it?? You can make all the excuses in the world as to why you can't return your cart but it all boils down to the me me me frame of mind!!

Aldi's has hit on the perfect solution. Not only do you have to return the cart to it's proper place, it isn't even in the parking lot...but next to the store. And, yet, for a measly quarter, people do it. I find that amazing. Seriously, if you are THAT lazy, WTH would you take it back for a quarter. But, I've never seen cart left anywhere but it's proper place at that store.

I wish all stores would adopt the same policy, and save us all the money they no doubt charge us via higher grocery prices.

Where I live, I often see people going through trash cans at our local shopping areas collecting bottles and cans. What are the chances that people who really need money, such as the homeless, return the carts for the quarter? I could see this being a good deal for some.

To the OP, I saw this on the news this morning too. We must be from the same state.

I see you live in MA. Spend a summer in Louisiana and tell me you'd leave your kids in the car while you return a cart. In late fall, early spring, and winter....yes I would. From about march to october here....no way. It's just too flippin hot. (Especially in a minivan where the back windows only crack open. When DH pulls over to get gas, it's sweltering in no time under a shaded canopy. A blacktop parking lot in direct sun turns my car into an oven.:scared1:)

Now, like another poster I DO try to park near a corral so I can make use of it. But if it's a choice of leaving babies in a car that can EASILY be 120+ degrees inside (even a minute longer than nessicary!)or leaving the cart in the lot...guess which one wins! :teacher:
yes, I can see not leaving your kids in a blistering hot car to return the cart...what I can not see is just leaving the cart wherever in the lot because you don't want to leave the kids in the hot car....take the kids with you to return the cart. I don't get why that's not an option here. :confused3

The Publix I usually shop at doesn't even have a cart corral. I've never seen anybody push the carts back into the store. I, like (apparently) everybody who shops there leaves the carts in the grassy medians between the parking strips and the employees retrieve them.

I'm not sure why this is such a huge issue to people...maybe because you actually get to see what choice each shopper makes and have the opportunity to feel indignant? I, personally, am much more shocked and appalled by people who don't wash their hands after using a public restroom (another opportunity for seeing the choices people make ;)). It also really bothers me to see people tie up their dogs (illegal in my city if they're tied up more than 3 hours). The worst is to see a parent smoke around their child or, even worse, slap them. :scared1:

it's an issue if you've ever had your car damaged by a wayward cart because someone was too inconsiderate to return it to the store or the corral. And for the record, not washing hands, tying up dogs, smoking around kids etc bother me too, although they rarely have a direct effect to on me unlike the damage my car has suffered due to shopping carts slamming into it.

I'd love to show you the damage my car has suffered due to wayward carts. I work in retail. Lucky for me I work at customer service with a great view of the parking lot. When I see a cart left in parking lot, I get to watch it slam into my car or into someone else's. Trust me ~ it's very real, it sucks and it's completely avoidable if people were to return the carts to the corral (or the store if no corrals available)

Okay, so you won't leave your kids in the car. Why can't you take your kids to return the cart? Why is the only choice to buckle the kids up, then leave the cart there? Wouldn't it bother you if you found a cart had broken your tail light, or left a nice big dent in the door?

I wouldn't value a car over a child's life either, but if your kids can shop with you, then I think they'd be able to walk with you when you return the cart.

I love the dramatics here - it's a question of VALUING HUMAN LIFE! :lmao:

Nope, you're lazy and rude.

Put the cart back.

May I ask how you manage to take your children with you to get the cart, but can't/won't take them with you to return it to a designated location?
It's not about being lazy or rude, but as the expert they interviewed stated, people refuse to take personal responsibility.

I don't see how a single parent with child/ren can return a cart to the corral, without committing a more grievious transgression of leaving their child/ren inadequately attended.

Too generous. :)

I take cart and DS (when he was in the sling, the cart "seat", or walking with me) to car, unload car. Then I close up the car, take DS and cart back. Then take DS to the car. So simple.

Come to New Jersey. No baggers, no one to bring your groceries to your car.

They must all be off pumping gas! (for those who haven't been to NJ (or OR) , it's not legal for the car driver/passenger to pump gas; they have employees that MUST do it)

Must have been a slow news day. Really, do the reporters have nothing better to do.

Agreed.

And I believe they say you should put your kids in last, in case someone wants to steal your car and your kids are already in it.

Such a good point!

I personally love putting carts back. On a family shopping trip just today I loaded the stuff into the trunk (while hubby and son sat in air conditioned comfort in the car), then took the cart to the corral, where I straightened up the haphazardly placed carts. I was so happy while doing it, and I was in sight of DS and DH, that I guess my son was asking hubby "why is Molly so happy?" I always smile and nod at the cart-taker-backers, even when they have the machines to help them (like at our Target).

In MY area, the big mystery is...where did all the cool half-sized Safeway carts go???????

Bottom line, if you don't put your cart back you are lazy and rude. no questions asked. you got out of your car, picked up a cart, walked through the store and walked with the cart back to your car. You can't walk another 30 feet to put it in the coral. It's sheer selfishness and laziness.

And don't give me this BS about leaving kids in the car. It's just another excuse for your laziness.

Heck, I've seen people walk 15 or 20 feet to leave the cart in a parking space away from THEIR car so it wouldn't damage it. People who do this don't give a crap about anyone but themselves and it shows. No amount of lame excuses can cover that up.

Good day.

You put your children in extreme danger by doing that. Don't you know that they could DIE in there.

What do you all think in this situation....

You pull into a parking space and use the cart that is in or close to that space. (cart is not in the corral) When you are finished, do you leave it where you found it? I will put it where it belongs. I actually take a stray cart in with me most of the time.

Or, you notice that the corral is overflowing with carts and your only other option is to return it to the store, but your kids are already strapped into their seats. I have left carts in this situation. I think the store has a responsibility to empty the corral and I'm not leaving my kids in the car.

I have also left a cart when I had my kids and it started to downpour and I put my kids in the car first to get them out of the rain.

I always return my cart if my kids can safely come with me to walk it over. Or, if I am parked within two spaces of the corral when my kids are in the car.

I won't leave my kids in the car if I have to go any further. Sorry!

It also depends on the mood of my kids too. Most days they are fine and will stay with me in a busy parking lot. This is the case now as they are older. Although, I have had days where I had a baby in a carrier and a 2 yo who wanted to run through the parking lot and I chose to put them in the car where it was safer than a busy parking lot. If I was within 2 spaces of the corral, I put it in...if not I LEFT it!!!!!!!I will not leave my kids in the car! I can't imagine what happens when you have more kids than you have hands.

Some parents can and do feel comfortable leaving their kids in the car. I am not one of them.

I would say that I return the cart 95% of the time. However, There are times when for reasons I feel warrant me leaving it...I do!
