Contemplating a trip right before Christmas with DS (age 7).

We have a TIW card and it has worked pretty well for us. I think the only meal we had on our last trip that we couldn't use it was at La Hacienda. (So-so food, nice view of Illuminations, much less noise than being outside for it!)

Disney is offering a chance to buy the Disney Dining Plan when I book a room at the passholder rate this time, which I have not seen previously.

I don't know that I would save money but it would be nice not have already prepaid and eat what we want.

I imagine the trip going something like this:

QS breakfast at food court (one of the all-stars)--20 percent discount using TIW

lunch TS--in park usually. (Tony's, Mama Melrose, Yak and Yeti)

signature dinner TS. (California Grill, Artists Point, CRT if I can find a reservation, etc.)

I seem to remember reading that I could use the TIW in conjunction with the dining plan--so I could get a discount on a glass of wine at California Grill. Or a second app for DS because he eats like a teenager. Is that right? How do the calculate the tip/discount? Just on the non-DDXP part of the check?

(I know I could also simply set aside the money I would spend on the dining plan, put it on a gift card and do my dining that way. I suspect I would likely be challenging myself to come home with money leftover for the next trip.)

Is there anyone who can share their experiences?

Yes, you could use the TIW for the wine and extra food ordered. The grat would be on the items not covered by the dining plan only.
