colonoscopy question

I had a colonoscopy in April. I had mentioned prior that I have a lot of issues with sedation. We spoke at length about it beforehand, I was assured I would be given enough to put me in a great twilight, etc, etc. Nothing worked !! The Dr said the anesthesiologist gave me the max. The Dr was so empathetic he wanted to stop, but I told him no, I would never come back. I couldn’t believe the people sleeping in recovery. Some were woozy standing up! By the time I was to leave, I was already dressed, the nurse could not believe it.

I would not recommend it, to be honest. For me, it was quite painful, amd much more than discomfort. We are all different that is for sure. I just hope I never need to go under general, because now I am honestly more worried about that.

I had my first one in May and I woke up halfway through the procedure! And it was no 'woke up and was woozy' it was woke up and was EXTREMELY ALERT. They were 'on the way out' so decided not to try anything else and I got to 'watch' them remove the last polyp and I found it extremely uncomfortable. I cannot imagine being awake for it. It was like really bad cramps that never went away.

Then I got a rash on my arm where the IV was that lasted a month. And I need to do it every 3 years :/

I did meet the doctor before he did anything, though. They were great--asked if I had any questions, concerns, etc. then wheeled me in.

I am 58 now and had my first colonoscopy a few years ago. I did have a consultation appt first, but it was an online appt, which I believe was due to covid restrictions for in-person appointments.

Yikes, sorry about your experience as well

The Dr called me a “non responder “
He says it’s extremely rare, but there some people . Naturally

Funny that I see this thread today, I’m having a colonoscopy tomorrow morning (my third one in the last 22 years) so I’m doing the prep today, oh joy🤪. I see my regular doctor every 3 months for a diabetic checkup and in February he said it was time for another one. Went to see the surgeon and to get it scheduled but they wouldn’t schedule it without a “clearance consultation” with my doctor. I didn’t think that was necessary since HE WAS THE ONE that said it was time for another one. But they made me see him anyway, before they scheduled it. All they really wanted the doctor to do was tell me when to stop taking my Eliquis. Could have done that by phone.

My husband had his third one two weeks ago, went fine but they did find a couple polyps that were pre-cancerous. One thing, the surgeon didn’t come to the room afterward to tell us his findings, how it went, etc. He just called me on my cell phone. Is that the normal procedure now? Just seems kind of impersonal to do that.

surprised no one on the thread mentioned Cologuard. I've done them 2 years in a row and all came back negative.. my primary care doctor swears by it (yeah, I know) but says I should do an actual colonoscopy after 3 consecutive years of Cologuard tests.. so I'm due for one in 2026, to confirm negative trends. I'm very happy with Cologuard (obviously not affiliated to them, just happy that it's not nearly as intrusive as a colonoscopy)
